Just wondering. I'm at 7500 miles and the filter or pre-filter (?) looks pretty dark and grimey. Anybody with knowledge on if it's washable?

if its stock air filter. I believe they are never recycleable material that will provide the same function after wash and clean.

Try sprint air filter.

Hi gatdammit,

I just change it to K&N Air Filter; done by my Ducati Service Center, so far so good. Model DU-1006 if I'm not mistaken. :)

I put the MWR filters on mine (replacement primary and their secondary filter). The factory filter didn't look washable. Getting to the filter is crazy, lots of stuff had to come off.

Yeah, the dealer said they aren't washable. Does anybody know of a maintenance cycle for air filters, or is just "when it looks dirty"?

Does the fuel tank need to come out to get to the air filter?

It does.

Remove seat.
Remove side fairings.
Remove tank cover.
Remove fuel pump cover and disconnect pump fuel and power.
Remove battery/ecu.
Remove crossmember.
Remove tank.
Remove voltage regulator.

Recommend getting a set of the ball end allen keys.

That's insane! So what's the spongy filter material I can see just below the radiator? Is that a pre-filter? That's ridiculous if I can touch the damn thing but I have to remove half the guts to get to it.

It's quite a bit but not too bad. Getting the tank out for me was the biggest pain (figuring out how the battery went back in was fun too).

The little filter is specific to the cam belts (I believe) and not to feeding the engine.

That's the air vent for the cam belt

And you don't want to mess with it...in 2005 I saw a newish Monster that had a belt tensioning bearing fail, it turned deep blue. This caused the belt to skip a tooth or three and bent the valves.

OMFG! Really? That's crazy! Guess I will be busy this weekend..... :(

How often are people cleaning the airfilter? My bike now has 8500 miles on it...... I do not think the last owner touched the airfilter.

We clean our airfilters a lot on our dirtbikes, but they are very easy to get to, as was my last two street bikes, vfr800 and Tuono Aprilia. This is insane to get to for the Hyper.....

I'm curious why the service manual says to replace the airfilter @ 18000 miles and then again at @36000. That seems like a **** load of miles!

Might be because it's almost fully shielded with plastic. It has a somewhat tiny rear facing inlet port to the screen. I think a year is plenty, though I'm approaching 2 yrs on my stocker. Gonna get the MWR HE kit as it opens up the airway considerably.

Is the K&N air filter replacement ok to fit without worrying about upsetting the mapping of the bike ?

So far, the only thing I've read that will throw a code is disabling 02 sensors without a tuner/flash.
