Dash flicking on/off

Has anyone had this issue?

Reversed the bike out of the garage after turning key and watching dash go through usual self check. At the end of the drive I twist the bars and reverse the bike through 90'

Look down at the dash and it's gone blank. Engine start button non-responsive.

Roll bike forwards again, twisting bars as a I go, and I see the dash 'boot' (i.e. I see characters displayed that are not usually displayed on start-up) and then go through the usual self check.

Repeated this a couple of times, same result.

I'm hoping it's just that the connector has managed to work itself loose, as it does seem to be caused by twisting the bars, but I probably won't get a chance to get a look until Sunday. Hoping someone else might have experienced this and can help in the meantime!

I wouldn't worry. This doesn't sound anything like the common electrical failure people have had.

There are a couple connectors jammed up behind the dash - I would unplug and replug them first!

So it turned out to be a bit of a piece of **** this issue. It got to the point where I was contemplating having to take it to dealer to get loom replaced. The potential cost was a high motivation to keep at it however.

So, I persevered by wiggling and jiggling until I could recreate the issue. It was definitely caused by movement of the main loom. Seemed as though the break seemed to be where it is cable tied to the frame, where there's a sliver of red tape wrapped round it.

So removed all the wrapping:

And found this:

Made sure it was very securely soldered back together:

And voila , no more frequently rebooting dash:

(The 'ERRORS' warning went away once everything was properly reconnected)

Surprised I'm the first here to come across this, but at least it'll help anyone else that experiences these symptoms. It was a pain in the *** re-wrapping the loom and feeding it all back though behind the headlight (it never seems to fit back the way it came from the factory does it...), but after riding my Transalp for a couple of weeks it was absolutely sheer joy to be back on the Duc last night.

Peace out people!

Wow... why the heck did they put a splice in there!?
Dunno man, but it's not the only one there's another further down. My theory is that this one broke because, as you can see in this pic:

It happened right by the cable tie holder. Imagine they just tightened the cable tie too much. Surely all it would take with time, miles, and lots of tight turns as one makes in a city. I left it a lot looser this time..

Hey what radiator cover is that?
edit: Looks like R&G? How does it attach on the bottom side?

Yeah I always chuck half the R&G catalogue at all my bikes. I think it's attached at the bottom with cable ties.

Good find. Glad you were willing to do the work, document it here, and solve the problem. It takes a pretty brave soul to be digging into a wiring harness.
