Ducati lies - the gas tank is 3.5 gallons not 4.2

Ducati says the Hyperstrada has a 4.2 gallon gas tank. Not according to my bike.

Fuel light came on and whenever I have filled right when it's come on previously I have only been able to stuff 2.5 gallons into the tank. So I figured I had 1.7 gallons remaining by the time the light came on. Was averaging 50-60MPG on the highway and 41 miles into the fuel light the engine died... out of gas.

Took a taxi to the gas station and filled 0.75 gallon bottle with fuel. Then drove the 4 miles to the gas station and filled up all the way. It would only take 2.75 gallons up to the lip. 2.75 + 0.75 = 3.5. So unless I'm missing something, the Hyperstrada tank is only 3.5 gallons, or maybe 3.7 gallons max. But at least a full half gallon shy of what Ducati says it is.

And yes, I always fill with it on the centerstand and always fill it visibly up to the lip and not just when the pump shuts off the first time.

When mine ran out, I managed to get 15.4 ltrs into the tank.
I think i managed about the same 40miles on the trip since the fuel light came on, I was lucky enough to be able to coast into the fuel station when the bike ran out of fuel.

Did you burp the tank? I fill sitting on it with no stands. When the fuel hits the neck, I rock it gently side to side and the level falls a couple inches as it burps pockets below. I can do this nearly 8-10 times before it maxes out. I would say that's at least a half gallon of volume released.

And, every vehicle tank has a portion of unusable volume. They sure as he'll don't put it in the fine print but, occasionally some owners manuals will state something like; "consider xxx amount unusable".

I'd guess an even 4 gal is about all you can use, depending on external factors like temp, maneuvering, etc. when I squeezed almost 190 miles before running dry, that was surely biting close to 4 gal.

Almost a year ago a member ran his dry being very conservative. I think he replaced about 3.9 if I recall correctly.

not again, please!

This subject has been beaten to death on this and other forums. I guess if you live where gas stations are >100 miles apart it's an issue, but otherwise I most humbly suggest that you get over it. Would this have kept you from buying the bike?

BTW, repeatedly running the bike completely out of gas will eventually ruin the fuel pump. That's why we have a low fuel light.
