Fabbri Windshield vs Ducati Carbon

Ok, got the screen, unboxed it, and noticed that Ducati includes the bracket it mounts to as well, since it's the screen that'll go on a Hypermotard that has no screen at all.

The screen is thin, matte finish carbon fiber on the front side, resin visible on the inside. The Ducati sticker was not even on the screen, but in the package of hardware. I left it off.

I installed it and took the bike for a ride. Still noisy around my helmet. Maybe even more so than the stock screen. I'm so frustrated.

I'm 6' tall, with a 32" inseam. Like the stock screen, this one seems to aim the airflow right at my face shield. No choice but to get wind noise if the angle of the screen is always going to be putting a flow of air right into my face. I was hoping the little carbon screen would put the flow lower. Like at shoulder height or something leaving my head in clean air. NOPE.

I'd changed the angle of the stock screen by adding washers, extra grommets, longer screws, and so on to tilt the top away from me. But it was still putting air right at my helmet. I'll need to see if I can tilt the little carbon screen up. I might not be able to. Maybe I need to lift the bottom up to lower the top edge. I didn't ride too long, or at real highway speeds, but even at 50 there was a howl due to air rushing at the helmet. It was smoother and less turbulent, but noisy nonetheless. I bought a brand new Shoei GTAir not too long ago to try to get some quiet. Not there yet. Even with -33db earplugs.

I really don't want to get a giant screen, or a Laminar Lip. So many seem to buy the ducati larger screen and then find it's not what they're looking for. I like the look of the little carbon screen. The stock screen isn't an elegant design.

UPDATE: The ride into work today gave me some time to see what was going on with the little carbon screen. The airflow is smooth on the highway, better than the stock screen, but my helmet is being hit by air that's causing a howling noise. The noise goes away if I ride with the visor open. So I did, and lowered the built in dark shade on the Shoei GT Air. I'll mess with my visor tightness to see if it's an air leak, but it seems that the noise changes if I put my hand at the bottom of the helmet and block the wind over the bottom edge of the helmet. I think air might be rushing up inside the helmet and putting pressure on the visor from the inside, making the howl. I think the little carbon screen isn't the issue, and that it is better than stock. It's probably a helmet thing.

I have the same problem with my ARAI helmets and it turns out its the wind rushing past the front air vent at the mouth area. I have a NOJ neck curtain on the helmets so no wind gets up there. Lift hand to cover the vent, all quiet, hand away, wind noise. In the summer I am ok with the noise but as it cools down I cover the inside of the helmet where the vent is with tape and use the shield venting. All quiet again.

I think I'm gonna get the Fabbri and cut it down, if I screw it up I'll get another and still be cheaper than the Ducati.

I have the Fabbri Windshield installed.
With the Fabbri i'm really satisfied and - in my opinion - it looks not so bad ...

LOL Your picture actually give more justice and looks better than the advertisement. Well done!

I'm thinking that any windscreen with a flat plane design is going to aim the wind right at my helmet because of the angle of the mount it screws to. Regardless of height. I mean, from a side view, the flow over the screen is always going to be at the same angle, unless there's a flip upward at the top lip of the screen. Maybe that's why those little additional spoilers that clamp or screw on are becoming popular. Aim the air flowing over the top edge of the screen.

You can always ditch the screen concept and go with the motard cover only. Cleaner air but no protection on the chest etc

I've got the Duc flyscreen, a GT-Air lid and mine's also loud. I'm 5'10" but don't run at 'Interstate' speeds for long (most of my riding is on the local mountain curves). I love both screen and helmet so I just live with it. I don't particularly like ear plugs but mine do attenuate the noise by about 24db for me when I use them. Good luck with a solution!

There was a wicked howl inside my lid with the shield down. I took off the helmet's draft blocker (a flap of fabric under your chin) and the howl went away. I think it was doing the same thing that happens when you blow laterally over the top of a beer bottle.

I totally envy your proximity to premium-quality twisties.

I'll try removing my 'draft blocker'--thanks for the tip. Yeah, the local curves are supremely rewarding and addictive. A run through the Dragon clears my head like nothing else can. I always come home smiling...with very hot tires. :)

Request for Measurements

Ok, the Fabbri screen is ordered and I'm going to reshape the top.

I was hoping some kindly soul who has the Ducati screen can help provide 6 measurements so I can get as close to the Duc screen shape as possible. Might be useful for future "shapers" also. The attached picture shows the 6 measurements. (from the screw holes to the key curve points)

Some of the points are not very sharply defined on my screen but, using approximate hole centers, I got:

1- 1-3/8"
2- 2"
3- 3-7/8"
4- 5-1/2"
5- 4-11/16"
6- 3-7/8"

:)

I had bought the touring screen for my motard. It pushes all the air right at my head. Still takes the edge off for long freeway rides. With earplugs it's fine.

But for twisties and everyday riding I don't like it and wanted to hide the rabbit ears. So I made this with a $10 piece of 3/8 acrylic from Tap Plastics. It takes the edge off the chest and does not create any more noise then without it.

Nicely done. Looks great. I like the screws you chose. Where'd you get 'em? I wont show the not so nice thing I made in a fit of frustration. For now I'm getting used to the carbon one. OK for the commute for the most part. Maybe for longer rides (few and far between) I'll put the stock screen back on if I get tired.

Thank you:D

The screws came with the touring screen. I take it the hyperstrada screen uses different screws. My bet is that you could find something similar on McMaster carr or see if your ducati dealer can get replacements.

Fabbri chopped

Ok, finally received the Fabbri and set about chopping the top off.

I first tried to use the measurements provided in this thread but it proved too complex so I went for the simple approach.
1) Took a template of the top of the current screen (wrapped card around the screen and drew around the screen on the card)
2) Put painters tape on the Fabbri
3) Cut out the template and stuck it to the Fabbri screen (positioning took a wee while)
4) Drew round the template, then removed it to see the resulting outline
5) Cut round the line with a dremel, then sanded down with a dremel
6) Final sandpaper by hand to remove imperfections along the edges
7) Final polish with the dremel polishing bit and some polish around the edges
Took about 2 hours start to finish

The back of the screen is polished so if this causes a problem I'll give it a light sanding to dull it down....and I took the damn sticker off.

I'm thinking about cutting the stock clear shield and plasti-dipping it. I'd have to use a jigsaw, though. I can never cut straight with a dremel and usually melt plastic.
