factory bags sun fade

I was told when I took the bike home the dealer told me to take care of the bags so they don't fade in the sun. Does anyone have any products I can use to stop them from fading

I don't see how you can stop sun damage on black fabric bags. Maybe Scotch Guard, but I don't even know if that would work.

After 1 year and almost 7K Florida miles, my bags are somewhere between Black and Purple in color. If you use them regularly, like I do, it's obvious the bags aren't meant to last as long as the bike. I'm gonna use them till they fail and then upgrade to hard luggage.

I was thinking about this since hearing they fade. I have some universal semi rigid bags I used to throw over the seat on other bikes I've had and they also faded to blackish purple. If these bags do the same thing I might see if I can find some fabric paint or dye, or "interior paint" which is something I used to change my car interior from brown to black. Then maybe some UV protectant over that. Unless I can find UV protectant spray and do them before they change color...

My concerns with the bags at this point are that one luggage lock didn't work right out of the package, and that there are threads fraying out where the zippers are sewn in. I kinda wish the bags were hardcases.

I was thinking some shoe polish foam stuff might work but I don't want to try

I had that thought too, but figured it might always rub off onto your hands or anything else that comes into contact with the bags. I guess if you wanted to try it on a part of the bag that isn't visible, just to see if it every really dries and becomes permanant, you could.

I use it on my boots and it is semi perminent after a while. It doesn't rub off on anything when it is dried.

I read somewhere else on this forum that the bags will be replaced by Ducati, under warranty, if your dealer agrees there has been too much fade.

Gatdammit I'm new here but if your bags fail I want buy them, well actually I want the mounting mechanisms so I can fab a set of aluminum bags to fit right on.

I'll keep that in mind. My dealer made a half promise to warranty them if I wasn't satisfied. I think Ducati would just say "wear and tear".

Not trying to hijack the thread, a simple question.

Is it possible to buy only the mounting mechanism on the RHS. Mine is broken when a pickup guy hit on my bags (or i hit him i donno) while filtering through the traffic. My dealer says i can only buy both bags as a pair and pure ducati website shows only LHS bag (no RHS bag) or i have to buy a pair.

Any thoughts on this....i haven't explored the option of fabricating the locking mechanism...is it doable??

Amazon.com : Ray Bloc UV Fabric Spray Sun Protector, 32 Oz : Camping And Hiking Equipment : Sports & Outdoors

I was wondering if anyone has tried this or any product like it, it's marketed mainly towards patio furniture but may work for us.

Read the reviews, many say that the fabric faded anyway. Several manufacturers offer "vinyl and fabric" paint that might work better. But my bags will never fade... 'cause they stay in their box on a shelf! ;)

PS Steffen, have you finalized those rain covers? You mentioned some flapping. Are they available, and from whom?

@zippy49

I found the cover in a outdoor shop here in Germany, normally they are used for backpacks! But they are perfect for the bags!
I took one bag to the outdoor shop and checked a few cover for the correct size but now its ok for my.
I use the bags only 2 to 3 times a year when i go on a bigger tour!

Gruss Steffen

the locking mechanism or the mounting mechanism? The mounting bit is incredibly complex for such a tiny part - two housing pieces, 4 bolt/nuts, 5 screws, 2 springs, a pinion rod...you get the picture. I would hope Ducati can order you just the one part - seems crazy to have to get a whole new bag - let us know

Omoishiroi, I mean the part that comes along with the bag, which locks the bag on to the bike. That part on my RHS bag is broken :(

Hope you like grey

I almost cried when I spotted my dealers demo Strada yesterday. It's been sitting on display in front of his shop during business hours for a year now and the bags look like elephant skin. All the other black plastic/seat look fine. I voiced my concern with the owner as we've discussed warranty claiming them a few times in the past. I don't know if faded color alone will get Duc to bite, but the zipper seems are also splitting a bit and I may go for it.
