Front brake

I've had problems with my front brake. It required a couple of pumps to get a good feel.

So whilst the Hyper was in for the 1st service I asked them to take a look.

They bleed the brakes but in the end have ordered me a new master cylinder.

I hope that fixes it. I have found that the real weak point on these bikes IS the brakes. Mine have been bled multiple times and while they work, they are just not as good ans my other Ducati's

I hope it does, the SP runs a brembo master cylinder and from what I read its a massive improvement.

dont really see why Ducati would have speced those brembo calipers then paired them with a weak master cylinder, considering it's the premium bike in its class..

I disagree. Aside from being a touch too grabby and the problems with the sticking bobbins making noise, when I want to stop immediately under control, the brake/ABS system are amazing. I consistently stopped the shortest in my advanced riders course.

i also disagree - the HS has excellent brakes which also work best on road and also perfect on track.

maybe the one or other has problems with brakes, same with electronic and other things. mine has a bad ABS pump at time and it is not sure that Ducati will cover it.
But anyway, i still have the position that HS brakes are top.

Good to hear.... Mine pretty poor but that's obviously coz there's a fault.

I will be happy to report back once it's fixed...

Even after 6500 kms my front brake is still quite "grabby".
I had expected over time for it to maybe bed in a bit more.

Is this the general case with the Hyper in that this is just the way it is ?
I have done a fair few hard stops now in trying to take that edge off it, but it seems to remain the same.

Appreciate any feedback that can be offered
Cheers

Mine was always very grabby with the stock pads. After 5k miles though, it was starting to have the "warped" front rotor problem that many of us have had. So after I had the dealer warranty the rotors (They wouldn't warranty the pads with them - go figure), I threw in my own Galfer HH pads. After riding with those, I am very impressed at how much smoother they are, as well as the improved stopping power when you really grab a handful.

Pads are a "wear item" and are never going to be covered under warranty. With a service contract, maybe.

My brakes are stock and work just fine.

Between a race prepped SV650, and RC51 and the Hyper, the Hyper wins the brake wars hands down. Those Brembos are just awesome. You may want to try a pad change or just recalibrate your brain to them (as every machine needs you to do). They are hardcore no doubt!!!!

I recently changed the front tire and in doing so pushed the caliper pistons all the way in. After the wheel was back on and the pistons reset, I zip tied the lever for a few hours. The brakes seem much firmer and the double pump thing is minimized.

I think that the abs circuit has to be cleared by pushing the pistons open - this procedure is called for in the manual, though without explanation.

Basic bleeding will not remove fluid/air from the abs circuit.

I don't have grabbiness - and i'm using the original pads. Perhaps cleaning the rotors with alcohol on a scotch pad will help. I use the brown scotch pads which are made for metal. I use alcohol because it's less volatile and nasty than brake cleaner and it does the job.

Just realised I didn't update this thread I started. The master cylinder was replaced under warranty.

The issue has been fully solved, but more than that the performance of the brembos are simply outstanding.

All I can say to anyone who does not rate the brakes on their hyper is get them checked by the dealer and don't let them for you off because When they work you cannot help but be impressed by the set up.

The lever feel and stopping force on my buddy's Streetfighter 848 are much better than on my Strada. The radial master makes a difference. Also, I suspect that the extra volume of the ABS system makes it softer, the 848 does not have that.

Agreed, this is why the SP has a radial master. I wish they weren't so expensive new.

Does anyone know of a radial master cylinder from another Ducati that will be an easy swap? I don't want to get one with the wrong size cylinder, as I know that can drastically affect braking feel.

The 848s have a way better master, and the feel is just much better. Which makes sense, the Hyper is a budget-er Ducati.

I got that way-better feel out of my 690 track bike with a master swap to a proper Brembo radial unit, so ABS shouldn't get in the way of improvements for the Hyper...

Your 690 Duke has ABS? Did not know that. I've been looking at used radial masters on fleabay, but I'm going to try bleeding mine first.

The Streetfighter does not even have the monobloc calipers that the Strada comes with. Definitely could stand improvement. Also, it cost less than my Strada.

Would be nice to see a chart of Ducati brake specs, with master cylinder piston diameter.

Mine also suck unless they're pumped first and even then they still suck. The brake fluid has turned black and the rear brake is non existent with less than 500 miles. My Kawasaki KLX 250SF brakes which I paid 10 grand less for are waaaay better than these brembos.

The brake fluid Ducati use is poor, change the fluid, I changed mine after about 500 miles too, done 10500 now and fluid still like new.
Also had a soft lever, pushed the pads back and cable tied the lever over night and now its fine.

Yup - I think I posted this 3 times on this thread - and the next post will be: "my brakes suck." Life in the movies.:)
