Gas leak, no start

Filled up this morning, did not top off. Fuel is ~1" from bottom of cap.

I drive 3 blocks from gas station to work and park it.

Attempt to start at lunch... no start, grey smoke from tail, smells like gas. Gas puddle on ground appears to be leaking from the Evap? Charcoal? canister thing on the left side behind the radiator.

I am still under warranty but I imagine them having the bike for two weeks to fix something that seems dumb and easy... Erico is super slow.

Anyone ever experienced this?

Remove the charcoal canister. It might be flooded?

Flooded, it was. Let it sit with the cap off a while and it started right up.

It's under warranty so I am not going to remove it... however, does it need to be replaced? Dealer says to bring it in for replacement. Is this an actual failed evap or will this just happen again on the next one?

There are two schools of thought on the canisters. Personally, they get removed from all of my bikes. Especially when they're unsightly like on the HS. What probably happened is fuel ran down the tank overflow and saturated the canister. It probably needs to be replaced if you're keeping it on the bike. I don't recall there being an inline check valve on these, but perhaps there's some sort of internal valve that failed. More likely the tank was pretty full when parked and it expanded a bit then flowed down the overflow tube. It's an emissions control device only- captures tank vapors then feeds them back into the intake.

I don't think they really go bad, just saturated like yours was.

BTW my dealer had no problem with me removing mine. It doesn't affect the reliability of the bike just the emissions.

Mine fell off the bike at the dealership before I even picked it up. No idea where it went to :D

Even though you filled it up well below the filler neck at this altitude it does not take much warming at all to push raw gas up out of the tank and saturate the evap can, then it is a ****** to start. I have had this issue on several bikes and that is why the can goes immediately.

As said above with a little rewording, It's an emissions control device only- captures raw fuel then feeds it back into the pavement.

Thanks guys. I'll probably end up removing it.

Mine was removed before I bought my bike. actually a little pissed. What happens is if you fill the tank to the top and put the bike on the sidestand, fuel will pour onto the road. Doesn't make me feel good.

It's a pretty f'n stupid design but let's face it, Ducatis have, and always will be, designed for form before function.

Pay for shipping, and you can have mine. They are pretty useless though.

Dealer confirmed... they don't care if I remove the EVAP but Ducati does and it is grounds for voiding warranty if they find out.
