I will be servicing her in the future, but she's going in for her 600-mile service to the dealer, and I figured I could ask them to turn on the heated grips function in the ecu; I've ridden mainly beemers, and this process and many other technical needs seemed straightforward. But once you've been cursed with heated grips, there's no going back"¦.
Special Tools required: Torx Tamperproof Bit T27, available online, or your local hardware store.
Ball-end hex wrenches (allen wrenches) if you have them as they aid in removing the windshield support screws that are located below the windshield support at an angle.
I went with the Ducati OEM heated grips; if I had to do it over, I'd go with an after market version. The extra $220 or so does not buy quality IMHO, but does include new throttle sensor, cable, housing, so the whole enchilada, hence the price compared to aftermarket units.
Regardless, first things first; "do not" disassemble the heated grips by removing the 2 security torx screws. This will "unwind" the return spring, undo heated grip cable routing, and it's a pain to put it all back together.
The new throttle side heated grip comes complete with throttle sensor, housing, hardware, and of course the heating element. My plan was to keep the current throttle sensor and cable as the cable routing was very tight. So I disassembled the heated grips and spent far more time than if I had just installed the entire assembly, which is what I ended up doing.
The heated grips do come with some decent instructions:
Order of disassembly:
Remove handguard bar-ends.
Remove headlight fairing
Remove windshield support by unscrewing all 4 screws; 2 obvious, and 2 hidden underneath.
Remove headlight.
Cut the wire ties around the rubber gaitors.
Move rubber gaitors and the wires around to conceal other ties and the 2 screws securing the upper part of the headlight fairing frame to the bike.
Remove both upper headlight fairing frame screws for easier access and removal of the throttle cable and plug. Leave the bottom screws intact.
Locate and remove the watertight "dummy" plugs from both heated grip plugs inside the rubber gaitors, the heated grip wires do not come out of the gaitors as shown in the instructions.
Locate and unplug the throttle cable.
Loosen the old throttle assembly screws, but do not remove completely; just enough to allow the old throttle assembly to slide out.
Install heated grips, and the rest is pretty much the reverse"¦.
I wish I had taken more pictures during the process, but if you need any clarification on anything, please feel free to ask.
