Forgive me for being politically incorrect, but it goes without saying that the Ducati name has a reputation, stronger than I realized, that's not exactly "Bud Light".

I'm amazed to learn how incredibly well known "Ducati" is to *non* riders. In fact, it seems like everyone knows what a Ducati "is" [i.e. fast, expensive Italian bike]. Perhaps it's the way the name has a cool Italian ring to it, much like Ferrari?? Not sure, but it has a resonance to it that sounds exotic and is also incredibly memorable.

In any case, here are a few examples that I've run into and I'd love to hear about others.

-the pre-teen kid who was "wowwwing" my bike with his dad, and after I said he could sit on it, walked away saying "I can't believe I just touched a Ducati"

-the guy in a Ferrari who was beside me at a traffic light, looked over, and nodded at me in the same "bro" way that I would expect from a fellow rider.

-the guy who was beside me at another light, who looked out at the bike, stared for a few seconds, and then came back out the window with his camera to take a pic. It sure wasn't me he was shooting :)

-at least 25% of the time that I fill the tank, someone comes over to check out the bike, talk about it, mention that Ducati's are fast, etc. When I had my KTM - itself a sweet ride - I'd say that sort of thing was less than 5% of the time. Much less.

Personally, I started riding during the Foggy WSB domination years and when the sexiest bike on the track actually takes home trophies, it makes an impression. I remember the first time I saw a red 996 booming down the street in college...I was just like that kid saying "wowww" to myself.

I've been surprised that most of the "nice bike" comments I've gotten have been from much older men that I would peg as HD riders. Ultimate sign of respect if you ask me.

and not one ricer or mustang has challenged me on the street yet! Is it just intimidation? Back in the days on my R6 I had silly Honda's trying me every time I left the house.

I don't get it on the hyper but sure do when I'm in my 76 Corvette.:D

And all of this it came for free, could you imagine?

The most common statement my wife gets when people find out she rides a Ducati is "Wow you ride a Ducati! You must like to go fast!" To which I respond "yeah because none of the Japanese bikes go fast..."

Yep. I often respond to comments about my bike being fast that my brother's Ninja 750 will flat out bury my Hyper. Perhaps not a Panigale ;-)

But again, my point, which I think was missed or mistook by some as being hifalutin, is simply that the Ducati reputation runs a lot deeper and wider [i.e. across the general non-rider population] than I'd ever expected.

Looks, speed and versatility. Some makes get close, but there's always a big "if only it didn't have _..." It's just a striking brand that not everyone can afford but actually performs. Smitten. And I have more warranty issues than most on this site.

I've had one Ducati or another since 2006. I keep getting (usually in a condescending tone) "Hmmm Ducati, that must be expensive." I usually reply "It's only expensive when you can't afford to buy one."
