Hyperstrada dead after 50 miles!!!

I plan on taking short trips through some rural areas. This scares me a bit, and coming from bikes that have never left me stranded, this type of report is concerning. BTW: my bike arrived at the dealer yesterday. I wonder if many owners will remove the canister.

If it bothers you, just ask the dealer to disconnect it for you on PDI. ;)

The dealer had removed it before I purchased my 2010 Multi12. My Triumph Street Triple has one, and 2500+ miles no problems. I have a friend with 2012 Multi12 with it still on, no problems. Strange, that this required a reset and dealer visit.

Reading thru the manual and the manual calls the charcoal canister "california evaporation emission system", its name implies that It would only be illegal to remove it in california. Am I correct??

Only untill you get caught...

I have been reading the panigale and monster forums. Seems like can they have the same issue. I may have the canister removed. I hate this, because my preference is to be as clean environmentally as possible.

There is a limit to my "green-ness". Any emissions product with "California" in the title immediately inspires bitterness and resentment in me. The cost of fitting this object to all stateside bikes for just CA is bull. Not only did I pay for a device I don't need or want, it also leaves many riders stranded in the first 100 miles. Many moto riders are somewhat technically savvy but think of the guy who just pushes his Duc to the nearest chop shop that charges him out the yang for something a dealer would do for free.

Sorry to my Cali brethren, but that state is broke because of these implementations and like it or not, many who buy foreign vehicles pay regardless of where you live.

This is probably the point where someone tells me wrong forum. Apologies in advance for the Friday Hate session.

I don't mind emission systems if they are well thought out. I've been to China on business and have seen/felt first hand what it is like to be in severely polluted air. Not good for ones health. It's the dumb ideas that get me mad like this ethanol in our fuel. It lowers power density of the fuel (lower mpg), it separates over time, absorbs water, rubber and plastic parts don't get along well, corrodes steel fuel lines and aluminum carbs ect.

No one's more annoyed by California emissions laws than...most Californians. The charcoal canister is nearly useless unless you religiously over-fill your fuel tank. And even then it usually leads to more fuel being burned since the tow truck has to come get the victimized newb in the middle of nowhere. Brilliant huh?
Anyway I still love this place. Come ride in Northern California and you'll see why. And yeah lay off the haterade, it's Friday man...plus the new Hypers are here!

I agree. Side note on emissions have you seen the Panigale exhaust for the Japan model? Yikes!!!

Just got home from New Brunswick 14 hour day took new bike off trailer to show off DEAD 12km , Wife wanted to cry me to . The BMW I gave them will start for 100 years . All winter I waited for this dreamed about it last nite . I'm lost in disappointment I will never trust it and will always hate it . Ffff Ducati

I think only US models as it's only a CA emissions item. Not sure what Europe has emissions wise.

I have a US model with canister and I've filled tank twice with no issues. Plenty of warning stickers and notes in manual about overfilling. There's even a warning sticker right below filler neck on top of tank. I've filled to just below bottom of neck and no issues.

That will be the carbon canister.
I'll be removing mine completely if fitted to UK bikes.
An evaporative emissions system is generally designed to route fuel vapors from the fuel tank into a carbon filter inside the canister. The canister is then routed into the engine intake where the vapors are merged with the normal fuel intake and burned in the cylinders.

***Note that it may be illegal to run the motorcycle without the evaporative emissions canister or if the vehicle's emissions control system has been tampered with or modified.

where not so bad in the UK, but california emission laws are very strict.

I want remove it too. Can I do myself I mean do I need some Ducati computer system reset ? Thanks

Yes, you can remove the carbon canister. There are no sensors and so no codes. Search for thread on that topic. There are detailed instructions and photos.

i have over 4000 miles.. i had a few issues in the beginning(new bike)... all seems good know. the more I ride it the more I like it. its fun off road too

My bikes live in a tightly sealed attached garage, where there is also our gas-fired water heater. That makes me worry about flammable fumes. So I have never removed the canister(s), and as long as I don't overfill the tank (which I don't) I have not had one problem with them, ever.

Also, remember that when owners keep modifying emissions-related parts, don't be surprised when the smog police crack down...oh wait, they are already. The EPA is trying to kill off racing here! Every owner who removes the catalytic converter (by fitting a race exhaust) is guilty. Do you really think that the Feds are blind? (PS this applies to the Hardley crowd, too.)

PS I've been to China...every person who thinks that pollution controls are not necessary or should not apply to them needs to visit Beijing in the summer.

Exactly this. Except maybe when I've had a cold, I've given no thought to the act of breathing. Until I started traveling to China regularly. It's really something to have catching your breath be literally a painful exercise.
