Hyperstrada fuel tank capacity

Are US miles more than UK miles. I never get more than around 98 miles until my amber light illuminates on my SP.
I am riding around congested London streets, stopping and starting with a full termi.

In congested traffic Im not surprised at ~100mi to the fuel light.

Personally, I've made it to 170 miles before filling up (not running out of gas) running on touring mode. I want to swear I put about 3.8 in the tank so I must have been pretty close to out of gas. My light usually comes on between 110-125. Stock hypermotard.

Last Summer I averaged 55 miles/US gallons, two-up on a five day trip. It's the power mode that matters, plus trying to be gentle on The Passenger. I run "Touring" with power at medium, ABS on 1, TC on 3.

I will say that Urban/Low is the only time I've seen the computer register over 51 mpg. You can feel the motor surges and hunts a lot less with the dampened response. I have a Cramp Buster for the hwy, too.

todays fillup

At 264km on the trip odo #1, I added 12.2L to the bottom of the fuel cap ring - in other words maxi full! That's 21.6 km/L, which I believe is about 60.9 mile/imp gallon. Probably about 70% of that was in Sport mode and the rest in Touring. Included in that was a 70km blast over the Kootenay Pass, probably averaging about 130-140kph and another 70km of twisties along the East shore of Kootenay LAke. I continue to be impressed by the HS's minimal fuel consumption.

I've been tracking my fuel economy since I got my Hyper:

Red (Ducati Hyperstrada) | Fuelly

Looking at my history, I've never put in more than 3.13 gallons and that was with 171 miles on the trip odometer.

Technically I should have been able to go another 58 miles before running empty which either means part of the 4.2 gallon tank is not useable or the light comes on much sooner than when a gallon is left in the tank.

CA Cycleworks will design larger tank if 50 people sign up

Chris Kelley at CA Cycleworks said to me in an email he would design and build a larger fuel tank for the new 821 Hyper if at least 50 people sign up to buy one in advance. Just saying. He made a 6.4 gallon tank for HM1100 that he sells for $899. I might start a new thread to see if 50 people are interested. A cheaper option for more fuel storage is a separate tank like the RotopaX mounted somewhere like on the tail rack.

I would like to get one though...but I think everyone here would like to know how many % increase from the stock?

There is no way to fit 6 gallons under those stock covers. Even one more gallon would not be easy! If it could be done, Ducati would have already. And it seems like a lot of money unless you live in the boonies and really need it.

Heck, I'm ready to get off and stretch after 150 miles...I like gas stops.

Just did a search & found this thread which is very helpful for me as fuel range was one of the things bothering me about the Hyper.

Right. Ducati is making such awesome bikes, I feel like they should be above this. Go back to metal tanks like Triumph has so people can enjoy their Duc for as long as they please without having to worry about such a bogus flaw.

There is no flaw - a plastic tank will expand and contract a bit - so what? Bikes from many years ago weren't prepped for ethanol and had a real problem. Apart from mooing like a cow after a long ride - there's no structural or chemical issue here.

Also - if you've seen the shape of the tank, there's no way to do that in metal - and I don't want a big blob sitting in front of me.

zippy is right. I've pulled the tank twice and it is literally shoehorned. The only options would be increasing the top and flanks, which would require new plastic. And it would look like a blowfish from the front with any sizeable increase.

If you hyper-mile this beauty, she'll give you an extra 40 miles easy.

Actually, after pulling the tank twice I envisioned a system where you wall off the inside halves of the panniers and run aux lines plumbed into the main line near the rear shock pivot point. It would take some engineering and a boost pump but would be the cleanest alternative.

Kuksul, draw that up in CAD and I'll only ask for 20% of the profits!

Last weekend I ran 150 miles of mountain roads in sport mode, no low fuel light and the fill-up took 2.4 gallons.

That is enough range for me. :D

There is a major issue with the Multistrada fuel tanks expanding and cracking so I hope this is not the same with the Hyper tanks.

HI Guys its been a while since I've been on. Just wondering if anyone has tested the range when the fuel light comes on.

when the fuel light goes on you have 5 - 6 liters left, means, if you drive not too wild you have 100 km left.

i personally get nervous at about 70-80 km on fuel light :D

really!? that seems kind of high, I thought there would only be 10-15 miles left at the most. I'm kind of weary to test it because I don't want to get stuck somewhere, I can't find that info in the owners manual either.

i only have german manual available on my pc - there, on page 24, following is written - it is the part where all lamps from dashboard are described

"6) KRAFTSTOFFRESERVEANZEIGE (OCKER).
Leuchtet auf, sobald sich der Tank im
Reservezustand befindet. In diesem Fall sind noch
circa 4 Liter Kraftstoff verfügbar."

this means in english - fuel lamp goes on when about 4 liters remain in fuel tank.
my experince is that it comes earlier, at least with my HS.

when my fuel lamp goes on and i refuel immediatly after that, only 10-11 liter fit into tank.
