Hyperstrada Maximum range

Even in Urban you're quicker than 90% of cars on the street. I rarely use U; mostly stay in T and often bounce up to S. I absolutely love having the ability to switch modes on the roll. I prob swap 4 times per leg on average.

Ive averaged about 52-53mi/gal over a few thousand miles. Always use >92octane gas. Typically run in touring mode..which is the only "mode" i left stock.

I changed my other two riding modes:
(sport) to a "raw" as in no traction/anti-lock interference and
(urban) to essentially a "heavy rain" mode with high DTC and anti-lock lvl 2

Still in break-in mode, so I'm not flogging her....yet. Just did my third fill-up, averaged 51mpg. This was also a test of how many miles I can get once the fuel lite comes on. Low fuel lite came on @ 131miles and rode another 48 miles until I chickened out and topped up. Yesterday was rainy so I took it easy going home avg 60-65mph. She took 3.5gals

I typically stay in touring mode and it's a 44 mile (one way) commute to work. It's about 2/3 hway and the rest a combination of bumper to bumper and slow moving hway traffic (25-30mph).

Will update with more time on da rode.

Peace

That's about what I saw during break in, about the only time I took it somewhat easy. Usually saw about 53 mpg on the dash, which was actually mid to high 40's. The light around 130 mi is consistent with my mileage, too, except I haven't had the pods to ride more than 40 miles on trip fuel.

I like hearing these stories as it bumps up my range confidence.

I see you wrote this post about your 2013 but now seem to have the 2016 939.

Do you get the same autonomy with the 939? I'm specially interrested in te low fuel range .

thank you

I was out on some longer rides with my 939 this past weekend. I did 45 miles with the fuel light on at one point because the gas station I was banking on turned out to be closed as they were having their tanks replaced. When I filled up the bike took 2.6 gallons, so I probably could have gone further if I needed to.

Whit 10k miles in my HS almost all on the road, my reserve ligth comes around 140 miles and the reserve last for another 40 to 50 more miles.

Speed matters. I was doing 120 in one of those empy roads for many miles, Ohhh , the reserve light came on after 90 miles .

Generally fuel light comes on at 220-230km (143 miles) have done another 100km (Not by choice) and approx 1 litre left at re fuel, so 330km (205 miles)
Combination of city/highway.

A friend has same bike, cannot get any where near my figures, definitely has a different riding style though!

I never take my bike out of sport mode. City, hiway or rain - sport mode.

I've gotten better than 50 and as low as 35mpg.

I myself have never took it easy apart from 1st 600 miles, I ride hard and I think most do, and average 50+mpg it may be a problem on your bike. Here's an extract from BIKE magazine on their long term test hyperstrada.

"it's efficient, readily giving 50 mpg in normal riding and can be pushed to 60mpg without much thought"

I'm not saying there is a problem, just might be worth getting it checked out when next in the dealer?? Just seems strange you can't get nearer the higher mpg range.

American gallons - or whatever they're called, are smaller than imperial gallons by about 20%. So for the US, that 50 is 40, and 60 is 48.

Computer Avg MPG vs. Real

I have only this week started a spreadsheet to keep track of things, but I am already seeing the ECU computer "Average Consumption" is optimistic to the manually calculated odometer and volume of fuel pumped method. My trip today was a highway journey (very little city/congestion) of 154 miles and I pumped in 3.39 gals of fuel. The real mpg (154/3.39=45.4 mpg) vs. the computer showing an average of 51.9 mpg. The owners manual states the 2016 Ducati Hypermotard to have a 4.2gal fuel tank (not sure if that is US gallons or UK gallons), but that would mean the motorcycle should have "legs" for a total trip of about (4gal x 45 mpg) = 180miles ish. I am not brave enough to run mine to vapor as I worry about getting the bike started again, but I am trying to figurre out what my total range. I was hoping for 200 miles driven sensibly....not sure it will make that.

Updated Calculations

Just Googled and found out UK (Imperial) Gal = 4.546 Liters. US Gal = 3.785 Liters. So the ratio of US/UK = 0.83267. The computer fuel efficiency of 51.9 mpg x 0.83267 = 43.2 mpg. Much closer to my calculated 45.4 mpg. The volumetric method relies on me filling the tank to exactly the same level each time at fill-up, so I anticipated the computer efficiency is correct.

Now the headscratcher is how to get the ECU corrected for US gallons for those of us riding these bikes in the USA!

Oh, you will develop a feel for the range under the different riding conditions. Warp speed will lower my refill range to 120 miles in the low Texas altitudes with crap ethanol contaminated gas. In the Sierras I find that my range increases to over 180 miles. In fact, every motorcycle I ride in the Sierras gets better gas mileage.

200 miles? Nope

The hardest part is remembering to reset the trip odometer with each refill.

Biggest crime of 821: no gear indicator and no fuel gauge. However, even on older bikes with a fuel gauge, it was still much safer to track range.

You'll read one or two posters that achieved 200 miles. I can't imagine how boring that would be. I rode as conservatively as I could for a range test and tapped out at 172. Engine didn't stutter or gag before stopping at the pump. I think I had a computer estimated average of 58, maybe even low 60's. I have a couple thresholds based on the type of driving I'm doing, and can use computer average to back that up. It's off, but lets me know how much twist I've been giving it.

Haven't seen any data showing improved efficiency with intake/ ecm/ exhaust mods.

So true.

I can't ride, or drive an auto, that way. Speed is my friend.

Thinking more about the matter: It reminds me of people who get double or triple the mileage out of the same tire as I do. My 1st thought is how dull do they ride?

But then, we all ride for a variety of reasons. Harley people like to ride slow in parade formation.
