Insurance Doubling

Stradista's,

Got a problem. Just received a renewal quote on my annual insurance premium. It doubled, from ~$330 to $650. The agent said they had insufficient data on the bike the previous year and some other blah, blah, blah.

So, this was my surprise after one year with the bike. Anybody else experience this?

Oh, it was the company with the talking Lizard, cheapest reputable company I found at the time. Could use some leads on $300-400 range policy holders that service the south east US.

The insurance cost in Mexico is about 8% of the bike price. At the current exchange rate the bike is a little over 16,000 uds, so we pay about 1,300 dollars for the insurance.

Bummer. The US insurance market is still a somewhat free market driven commodity. There is no set rate. Any company can offer cheaper rates to build a customer base, though you could be gambling when you file a claim.

Seriously, a lot of members in the US quoted mid $300's when we started taking delivery a year back. Any of you guys getting the same treatment, and, if not, who's your carrier?

$1200/year up here in Onterrible, so little to no sympathy for you. Some insurance companies view all Ducs as super sports, and apply a 300% surcharge.

All that for 8 months of good riding.

I have USAA, probably the best out there, but they don't insure bikes. They push you to Progressive, which gave me an obscene quote last year.

Haven't tried AAA.

I hear you. I moved to Quebec, and even with the higher cost of registration [close to 500], I am saving over 1000 bucks on insurance and registration.

Thank god in Quebec they differentiate between rockets and motards. If I were registering a Panigale, I would add at least another 500 just for public liability.

Not a bargain in the US.

Allstate quoted $383, with vanishing deductible and all that jazz. Most of the companies are still have trouble getting solid information on the model. Oh, and all Ducati's are considered "Sport" bikes in the insurance world...

That sucks, I have been with Geico for along time and just added my HS for $280. I hope they don't do that to me also.

When I signed on with Geico a year ago, the rep couldn't find the bike in his system for building a quote but knew his stuff and I thought it was fair. The reason for bumping was something along the lines of "we realized we had not evaluated your motorcycle properly and were under charging..." I immediately knew I was dropping them.

I will add that I had most of the minimum coverage options, even some I didn't need, like uninsured motorist coverage.

For my Allstate plan, I cut some of the fat. I paused at the uninsured motorist premium and thought, "why?" I already pay for half this country to do nothing; **** em if they buy a vehicle they can't insure.

I'm no insurance expert, but isn't that coverage so you get paid even if the uninsured driver is at fault? You use a tort system for insurance down there, so cost recovery comes from lawsuits....and if duse can't afford car insurance, he probably can't afford to pay you...

Quit your yappin'! I'm paying $1,450/yr with Foremost. Just be happy you're only paying what you are! I live in CA and never had an accident nor a ticket and spotless record. Working against me is I'm a single 20 something guy with only few years riding experience.

I pay $1351.00 a year for the Hyper and a Monster. With full replacement value for 4 years on the Hyper. Full coverage on both.
I'm 40 no accidents,claims or tickets.....yet!

Sometimes it pays to be old (besides the Social Security income)...we have two cars, a pickup, and four bikes insured with State Farm. With various discounts it runs $3600/year for all of them, for both me and the wifey. Her driving record is not perfect, either. But loyalty is rewarded; we've been with them for 35 years.

However, I dropped collision coverage on the bikes 15 years ago. I found out the hard way that State Farm wants all the claim payment back plus more right away. I had two small 'incidents' in a row (one was a bent wheel on my Triumph Trophy 3) for under $1100 total and they bumped my pickup to $4000 a year. My (ex)agent gave me bad advice; took quite a while to clear that up. Now if I break it, I fix it. We don't have more than minimum liability coverage on the bikes, either. Both of these are real money savers if you can handle a bit of risk. We do ride bikes, don't we?

OTOH we have zero deductible on comprehensive coverage (four wheelers) as we lose a windshield to stone damage every year or two. It also took care of $1500 worth of rodent damage to my pickup last year...at no cost to us.

We have our homeowner's and earthquake coverage with them, too. Our current agent even rides!

+1 this is mandatory coverage here in Cali. What, you don't have unlicensed and uninsured drivers in Florida?

We don't pay for any medical coverage in this case, but we have a great Kaiser plan already.

Renewing this month

Texas, State Farm, $272 for 6 months full coverage. Clear record and have been with them for years.
