MPG improvement

I averaged 66 MPG on my last ride. 900 miles. Passing cars at every chance and cruising 80MPH on average. Up and down mountain passes with a spirited throttle.

This is quite the improvement from last years long ride. I averaged under 50 MPG over roughly the same mileage. Last years ride was considerably more flat.

Only differences I can think of;

MT60 tires (hard to believe these made an improvement)
91 octane - was running 85 before. I still think the bikes runs better on 85.

Does mileage get better with age or what? In just over a year I have put about 6800 miles on it.

Can only guess.
Altitude plays a factor- Colorado has lots of variance.
Octane: I'm guessing the engine either adapted to lower octane by changing the timing, or you were pinging.
Engine: Mine seemed to break in nicely at 6000 miles. This would lead to better fuel mileage. I never checked though.
Luggage: bags etc. would lower mpg.
 
Where were you getting the mileage figures? From the dash display or from actual fuel pumped/miles ridden?

I ask because I find the dash computation to be consistently optimistic.
 
Hi guys just wondering if any of you have ever measured the distance you can ride when the low fuel light comes on.
 
I got 172 US miles on a hypermile test. Engine was still running when I pulled into station. Couple others in here got closer to 200 or more.

There's a thread out there. Couple years old.
 
Depending on how hard I'm riding it, it varies wildly, but I always fill up on the centerstand to get the most I can into the tank. I've seen it come on at 91 miles while flying down the interstate into a strong headwind, and I've seen it as many as 160 miles from casual (read: slow) riding on backroads. I've pushed 40 miles past the light before, but I still don't think I want to go much further than that.

probably 4 out of 5 times though, I get around 120 miles before I see the light.
 
That's perfect. in metric terms that's 200km before the light comes on, which is right about when I'm ready to stop no matter what the bike. It's obviously a way better warning light than my old air-cooled Multi (now owned by my son), which illuminates at 140km when the tank is still 2/3rds full.
 
I've been having my fuel light come on anywhere from 80-95 miles. Doesn't that seen a bit low, I mean it's a4 gallon tank running arty least 91 octane, sometimes I put 93 or 94 of I find a sunoco.
