So I was going ahead with the 1000km oil change on my 2015 Hyperstrada and followed the good word of the folks at K&N that stated that the KN-153 oil filter is a perfect fit for the Hyperstrada (Link here Ducati Hyperstrada Oil Filter - Replacement Oil Filters ) ... No reason to doubt them at first since I've done this oil change with this filter for 10 years on my 749 without any issues. But once I tried to screw on the KN oil filter I realized that the threaded hole surface of the oil filter is receded into the filter housing so much so that the threaded nipple on the bike does not reach to get screwed in ... So I resorted to putting back the Ducati filter and giving KN a good cursing ... hope that telepathically reaches them come Monday morning ...

Has anyone successfully used this KN filter on the Strada ?

It also seems that the filter housing is a few mm longer on the K&N filter and as it looks to me there is not much clearance in the bottom plastic guard to accommodate for the longer filter and the wrench on nut.:rolleyes:

I can't seem to find the thread, but I actually stumbled on a post in a forum that said these new K&N filters are defective. They switched manufacturing from one place to another, and people can't seem to get enough threads engages. Also, there were issues with the oil pressure bypass valve. Or maybe that was the KTM oil filter.

Here is an Amazon review I found: Could not install filter into Ducati Hyperstrada due to the threads not engaging. After comparing to original Ducati filter found that the KN flange, where the threads are located, is flat. Original Ducati filter had a bulge, so the threads are closer to the gasket plane. Went to the CycleGear store and looked at several KN-153 filters. Some of them had a bulge and some of them did not. All of them were the same part number KN-153. This is unacceptable and KN should recall these filters.

Personally, I use the Ducati oil filter.

Interesting...
Like kuksol08, I stick with the factory filter. A couple of my co-workers are big into motocross and Baja racing and I've heard them say several times that "K&N ain't what it used to be".
For whatever that's worth.

Thanks for the replies ... I guess i am going to go with the Ducati filters as well ... Had a good 10 year run with these on the 749 but indeed one would think that the manufacturers website would be correct ... Ain't what it used to be sounds about right ... :) Back to the internets to find ducati filters ...

You can get them from Ducati Omaha and they ship for free over $30 I believe.

I've used K&N oil filters for two changes now, and have had no problem. The filter for Yamaha R1s has been identified as having that fitment problem, and have been banned by most racing organizations. One let go at COTA during MotoAmerica practice and thoroughly oiled the track.

However, I bought those filters more than two years ago. RRW had a letter about the R1 filters, and blamed the problem on a recent switch of manufacturers. So I'm starting to use Hi-Flo.

The fellow who founded K&N is a personal friend. He sold the company some years ago, and is no longer involved, but I feel sorry for him. Well, I would if I hadn't seen his garage....

Wow... he has to be well off. K&N is a huge name.

Yup, same thing happened to me this spring, it wouldn't screw on the threads. I returned to Autozone and emailed K&N, never heard from them. I have always K&N too, back to Ducati oem filters I guess.

Hehe cool story ... Good for him ... I'm sure since the picture only captures one corner of the garage that the 3 other corners have something to show as well :D

Nonetheless it seems that the general consensus is that "it ain't what it used to be" and we need to make some changes :) my 749 is going to graduate to a living room decoration after many years of good service and I am going to have a look at the HI-Flo filters for the Hyperstrada :) Unfortunately Canada does not offer many alterntives ...

If you guys want a cheaper alternative to the OEM filter, give Hi-flo a try. They have two models, which as far as I'm concerned are mostly the same. One is the standard filter, the other is designated "RC" for racing. It has a nut welded on the end like the K&Ns.

Half the cost of the OEM.

The amsoil 138 is supposed to be very good. I bought a k&n last year that was fine.

Anyone know what sized hex wrenches are needed for the oil screen and the oil screen cover? Posted before and no answer - is anyone puling and cleaning it?

I think it's 14mm. I bought a 12 and 14 because I wasn't sure either and I believe the 14 was the one that fit. I cleaned mine after break in and found only a few small flakes of metal.
