Recommended gearing?

Just got my Hyperstrada and have the stock gearing. I've heard a lot of people say they recommend changing the stock front sprocket to a 14T for better usability around town. Others say they wish there was something in between a 14 and a 15 tooth as the 14 changes it too much. So I'm guessing for that to get a middle result you could also change the rear sprocket?

Just curious what you guys have found as the ideal gearing setup for the Hyperstrada to find out which parts I should change to get the best drivability out of it.

Thanks!

Why are you guys messing with the gearing? I have changed the gearing on my other Duc's as they were very long and it transformed them, but I find the Hyper has the most practical gearing, especially for town use out of any Duc I have ever ridden.

I just want it to be easier to ride around town. Want to be able to go through a corner at an intersection in 2nd gear without worrying about the revs dropping too low and needing to drop into 1st or ride the clutch.

How did the 14T affect the usable power band? I think it's such an effective spread of power that I wouldn't want to hurt that, but I find no need to alter gearing as I'm mostly highway.

Sure, it dies below 3K but switching to URBAN/LOW really dampens the surging and chugging in a crawl, more so with latest ECU update. Being quick on the power modes really balances the bike. On average I swap at least 3 times on a single leg. I'm quite partial to Sport (HIGH) on the highway, Touring (MED) round town/taking it easy, Urban (LOW) in heavy traffic.

This is part of the reason I switched to a 14T. I try to avoid the highway like the plague its just no fun so what if I lose my 110 MPH top end I don't care to be there. I'm more interested in being able to launch out of a corner or wheelie when I chose to and keeping the RPMs up at lower speeds is key.

The Hyper will max out at 110? Wow that's slow. What's it get reduced to with the 14T sprocket? I took a Honda CB500F with just 48HP up to 100mph. I would sure as heck hope a 110HP Ducati could do better. Seems almost impossible that 48hp could hit 100mph (and it kept climbing) and 110hp can only do 110mph. Whaaaatttt?

That's all indicated, mind you. I think someone on here clocked a 6% error in the gauge. It will pull well to 130 on speedo but it is obvious that top speed was not a design element of this bike.

A couple reviews stated an honest 140 mph.

to the gurus out there,

i'm at the other end of this gear issue. i wanted a slightly taller final drive for highway duties as i find the stock ratio of 1:3 (15/45) too revvy and felt like the engine is asking for a 7th gear. also, the bike very easily starts rolling on 2nd gear from a complete stop... but i don't want to compromise city driving (stop & go traffic) just yet. i'm looking into 15 front/43 rear or a ratio of 1:2.87

- will this work?
- can the engine still go to its redline threshold with the added "load" and perhaps a potential increase in top speed?
- do i need to have the ecu tweaked with this mod?

I am not a guru, but
It will work, but you might need to shorten the chain by 2 links
I doubt it, at over 100 mph its more about aerodynamics
No. Even the traction control will be ok as it uses the disks on the wheels.

But going from a 1:3 to 1:2.87 will not do much to change the revs. I went one tooth down on a previous bike and it just raised the revs by about 500 at 60 mph (it redlined at 12.5k).

thanks for the snappy reply

not really looking to lower the revs by a considerable amount. so ok, i also don't need to go over 180 km/h. just wanted to ride the lower gears longer during acceleration and not to shift sooner. i'm guessing i can do away without shortening the chain as the eccentric hub can take the slack of a 2-less teeth sprocket. i'll eventually know for sure once i have the thing installed. but i'll have to order this quick change carrier & sprocket set first. the quick-change system makes more sense as i can experiment with different sizes without the hassle of removing the hub assembly every time i change gearing

Many Ducati owner tend to put a 14T in fron (from 15T). By doing so you will have higher rev on lower speed and that will make the sloow speed / town riding more fun and easy.
It gets quicker, can do wheelies with less efford (twist the trottle and up you go) and gets less harsh on slow speed as you can have a higher gear.
I will change mine in Aprill to 14T just for riding i town and have more power when on twisty roads. :)
