Rev limiter settings

Ducati Johannesburg tell me it is against company policy to swop parts out for diagnosis purposes.
I played with the exhaust valve over the weekend - No change:(

Still waiting for feedback from the dealer, I hope they sort this out during this week, my frustration levels are peaking:eek:

Well, against "company" policy is probably a bit of a fib. Many guys who had the ECU/coil issue had dealers swapping showroom stock parts to isolate.

If the dealer owns the inventory, then he's responsible for any damage incurred.

Maybe its against dealer policy, to be honest I don't care anymore. It's been a month since this nonsense started and still no joy. I have now been informed that the dealer is too busy to look at it, despite advice coming through from Italy:mad:

In my industry we refer to this kind of treatment as a "hospital job" They will get to it when they feel like it. Priority work first:(
I had this years ago with a Buell XB9 I owned. The gearbox packed up at 3000 kilos and Hardley Abelson kept pushing it to the back of the queue. After 7 weeks I gave up and sold the damn bike:eek:

It seems to me that Ducati owners elsewhere have had better service than this, or is it my imagination:confused:

I find it hard to believe that your bike doesn't exhibit any other symptoms or problems.

On another forum one post made me instantly think of this thread, the person was bypassing his clutch safety switch due to aftermarket levers by hot-wiring the two terminals together. He reported that the motor refused to accelerate because the ECM thought that the clutch was always engaged, so it was protecting itself. So his solution was to disconnect the switch and leave it disconnected. His RPM returned to normal.

Maybe that's something you want to try.. look at the safety switches (neutral, kickstand, clutch) on the bike and see if you can systematically disconnect one, go for a ride.. no change.. reinstall.

That, and maybe electrically disconnect or return to stock anything remotely aftermarket (or factory options aka heated grips, LED anything) for electrical accessories one by one, try to ride and see if your symptoms improve.

If that doesn't solve anything, I'd be pulling out the multimeter and going pin to pin, and pin to ground on the whole bike looking for any shorts, dead grounds or high resistance..

Thanks for advice Zibbit, I have been through the bike front to back already - Nothing wrong as far as I can see.

The dealer tells me that the problem is electronic. Word from Bologna is that the ECU can set itself to limit over revving in neutral, and if the "brain" thinks the bike is in neutral all the time it will never allow the revs over that point, regardless of what the riding conditions are. They seem to be pointing to a faulty sensor reporting to the ECU that bike is in neutral, or at least that is what they think.

In all honesty I don't think they actually know what is happening, and the dealer is fobbing me off as there may be an expensive repair coming.

I have also surfed numerous forums about this issue, and the same complaint pops up on several Ducatis, but the reasoning varies from dashboard to ECU problems, throttle bodies being replaced due to TPS problems as well as blocked filters and goodness knows what else.

I have owned 37 bikes to date, and I have never been as frustrated as I am with this problem and the lack of solutions.

thats the sucking point. problems can occur, but garage should be able to solve the problem in an acceptable timeframe

Ok news flash!!!!
I fixed it myself:D (After sitting at the dealer for 2 hours this morning while they plugged the bike into computers and compared readings to other Hyperstradas they had on the floor)

The techie's conclusion was that the neutral sensor has packed up, and that the ECU thinks the bike is in neutral all the time and thus restricts the revs to 8000 rpm. They did not have a neutral switch in stock, and ordered one in for me which will arrive next Friday, more frustration: mad:

When I got home from the dealer I pulled the switch cover off (it's a grey rubber grommet on the back of the motor in front of the exhaust downpipes) and found a cheap and nasty yellow/green wire with a damaged insulated connector shorting against the motor - Bingo!!!

I fitted a new connector, heat shrunk it, and nipped it up before I reconnected it to the neutral switch and the problem is gone. She now pulls like a train right through to 10 000 rpm and the smile factor is back: cool:

Hopefully I can now enjoy the bike again and forget the frustrations of the last month.

File this thread under very important for future reference: rolleyes:

congrats, great job.
have pleasure again with your HS.
But, it's a shame for Ducati dealer that it lasted so long to find the error and not to find the open cable, as you did.

@PomGP

if you have time can you make a picture, so we can see the problem thanks!

So it was not a ECU problem;), it,s more a dealer problem lack of experience!!!

Welcome to the Ducati world! Ducati is not perfect but I liked and I will not go for other brand! I hope I see some guys in Italy WDW 2016 ;)

Gruss Steffen

It's really obvious, a light grey cover on the RHS, behind the rear brake master and reservoir. Thanks Pom, for the heads-up!

woot woot, I'm glad you got it sorted out... and I'm pleased I wasn't too far off of where to check.

Awesome! Maybe Ducati should hire you as a local tech rep since it sounds like your dealership isn't the best in that area.

Took the bike out for a blast yesterday morning and the fun factor is back:D
I am now a happy camper again

Here ya go

Just amazing that the mechanics didn't check the neutral sensor connection, having diagnosed the sensor as the likely problem....!!! very glad you have it sorted now, and good to know to check this wire. Ride hard, ride safe.
