Trouble with Panniers

Read this thread before I got my Hyperstrada and was prepared.
The panniers was very hard to get off.

I removed the lock unit from the bags, removed the lock cylinder.
Grease on lock cylinder and locking pins and on the units on the bike
Now the are easy to put on and off.

I've had big issues with the pannier removal. In fact I could not remove my left one at all until the 1st service. The right comes off with a very hard yank, almost brutal.
The dealer showed me that I need to tap up hard from the front at a 45 degree ish angle to get the left one off. Not impressive for a £11,000 machine.
I carry stuff in them all the time and getting full face helmet and waterproofs into one side is superb. I thought the little padlocks I was given by the dealer are again a bit poor considering the price. Couldn't live without them though!

My dealer filed down the sharp points on the locking pawls and put a dab of graphite on the contact side. 99% better. Sometimes just a little shake or pop from bottom but at least I know they won't depart the bike at 90 mph.

I lost the locks within first 3 days of owning. Guess I left both open and they were history. They were quite crappy quality anyway. I use a beefier luggage lock.

It should not be this hard to remove!!!!!

You are totally right.
I had a hard time like many to remove them after a short ride and I have talked with my dealer and he told me that on all there strada they lubricate the attachment as one of the items to do when assemble a new bike.

After they lubricate the lock mechanism on the bag, I have no problem removing them.

I think the design might have come before function here.

Even after the first service supposedly sorted the issue I still had serious problems so I swallowed hard and stripped the lock mechanism, added marine grease, and they are perfect now. See Ducati Hyperstrada panniers hard to remove for how I did it and some photos.
It literally took 5 mins per side and all you need is an Allen key and a small Philips screwdriver.
I hope this helps.

I had read about this problem before taking delivery of my HS last week. I also found the bags troublesome, but occasionally the bags released with ease. I figured there must be some 'trick' to getting the right push/pulling motion when trying to lift them off. After a half hour of trying several sequences and failing, I started to 'jiggle' the bags back and forth using both hands on the outer edges while pulling up. No problem since.

570km and totally in love with this bike!!

Hi Folks,

New on here so be gentle. I had problems with my panniers before a trip to Holland last week and in the heavy pulling of the bag managed to rip the nylon material. I just could not get the left hand one to release and I found that I had to use my finger to get it to come off. Being an Engineer I just had to get to the bottom of why the pannier wouldn't come off. I rested the pannier on the garage floor to unzip the liner of the bag and get to the mechanism. I didn't want to work in the gloom of the garage and so retired to the kitchen with allen key in hand. After many turns, I found that the nylock nuts were missing from the external plastic bracket. Confused, I went back to the garage to see if I had any spare and found four nylocks in a perfect formation on the floor. I gave the locking mechanism and key a quick squirt of WD-40 and put the whole thing back together but this time made sure that the nuts were tight. I put the bag on the bike and hey presto the bag comes off with no effort at all.

The bottom line is that the bracket was fixed firmly to the bike but the pannier was loose so no matter how hard I pulled it was never going to come off. The good news is that Ducati are going to replace the damaged pannier. I need to get the right hand one checked as it is a little bit awkward to get off.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

I've also recently found that when removing bags, if I keep pressure on key in unlocked position they come off much easier. If I release the key, just the slightest bit of play in lock causes binding.

My biggest concern is the faded black color. Everything is getting a blue/purple tint to it. Zipper hem seams are looking pretty ragged, too.

I had the same problem, if you open the latch, you will find a spring, it has two positions, one harder and softer, changing the position of the spring makes it easier to remove.

Have it serviced

Hi,
I had the same problem.
I told the dealer and the panniers need som internal greasing...
They dismounted the lock to oil it because even the key barril was tight and i nearly bent my key because of the friction ..
Now it works like a charm.... seems to be a "jougness problem" ;-)
Cheers
Pascal:D

Mine were stuck and wouldn't come off unless I used a screwdriver to release the latch from underneath. I was ready to take it back to the dealer. Before I did I put a tiny bit of white grease on the latch on each pannier and now they slide on and off with basically no effort. Very small amount of grease. Perfect now.

you can file the sharp latch foot down a bit and it helps more. I still think most of the problem is in the tumbler.

Had the same problem; also had to get underneath to spring the lock. Took it to dealer, and a little WD40 did the trick.

You should be getting a decent click when you turn the key.

Mine work fine now.

I just did this very thing, and it worked like a charm. I used Triumph grease, though.

I initially had the same issue and ended up unbolting the case from the inside and dismantling the mechanism to get it off the bike. What I found was the bag had not settled directly onto the bolts, but had slipped up the side of the lock on the bag, not making much sense sorry but this is want happened. I lubed with some silicon spray and it now works perfectly.

I read this before trying to remove mine the first time, which was difficult.

WD40 in the lock cylinder..... no more issues.

Panniers

I too had trouble removing the left side bag, right side come soff with ease. I did spray the latching mechanism lightly with a silicone and now they work fine, no jerking or pulling to remove.
Hope this helps.

Just want to say thans to the OP for posting this. Just took delivery of my strada and had a near impossible time getting the left pannier off. Busted a few knuckles when I finally did though. Took the locks apart and greased them like recommended and now they work like a charm.
