Warranty Work

Twozzie, put the bike up so the front wheel is in the air. Spin it. Put you finger, screwdriver, or something onto a solid part of the forks, then put it nearer until it just touches the still spinning brake disk. When the disk spins does the distance from your measuring device change?

Rotor spins ok so something else must be causing the pulsing. Back to the dealer it goes. I'll ride their demo for comparison.

Back from when I was doing a lot of track days in my car, I was told by a brake industry guy that most of the time when someone thinks they have a warped rotor, what they've really got is uneven deposition of pad material on the rotor.

Now what you're supposed to do about that, well, that part I don't remember.

I would be looking at the buttons. You can oil them lightly and put a bolt through with a washer on both sides, tighten a nut, and spin the buttons to get them loose. The disc should be able to move some to float, this may be what you are feeling. Doubt they are warped.

Maybe a better way to do it is with a tie-rap around the front fork. You can cut it off as you wish and it does not damage the disc when it hits.
And you can check both sides at the same time.....:D

On my Monster Evo I had a pulsating feeling on the brake when I pulled the lever gently (....sounds strainge when I write this down....:D...). The Ducati mechanic advised to brake later and harder because the calipers are oversized for this type of braking and use....
I tried to brake at a later point and use more force, amazingly it worked!!

So maybe the brakes (including ABS) are to big for the use on the HS and are designed for more brute force.

Doesn't account for silky smooth action on dealer demo. Grabbing a handful more will hide a lot of brake issues.

My demo wss smooth either witb a little or lot of braking. Much superior to my single 16 year old front rotor on my F. Air in line or abs issue or both maybe check for dirty abs sensor ring or warpage/loose mount or sensor loose?. I use the rear and engine braking on my F and not much front. Same front pads after 20k mi but second rear set. :)

The bike goes in Thu and they will have it for however long it takes. I get the brakes may to too powerful for the bike but the action should still be smooth and there sure as heck shouldn't be any noise when braking hard. I get changing pads and the brake lines but its a new bike and damned if I should spend more to fix design / quality issues. If this was a new car I wouldn't think twice about fixing it myself, it would go back to the dealers until it was right, so this is the plan of attack (for now).
My 2008 Hypermotard was buttery smooth on the brakes and I expect the same on this bike - no exceptions (even with ABS on or off). I'm sure it will all be taken care of.
More bulletins as events warrant, cheers

Sent a very detailed message to my dealer of front end issues. They're going to pick the bike up and force Duc to make it right. Feel bad if they replace entire front end but just want my bike back to spec.

Find it odd that haven't had one software update yet.

Been in contact with my techs. They're going to do the following:

1. Replace fork oil with their best Ohlins mix (forgot type/name, but they do build track bikes and sponsor track days often)

2. Swap stock rotors for Brembo free-floating race setup with pads. They've done this before for a Panigale that had warping issues and he said there is no way in hell I could warp these (and they will last as long as the bike, too). Lots more play in the buttons makes them more forgiving setup.

3. 3 ECU updates: dash, ECU and BBS - I guess the BBS is another black box that helps all the other boxes talk to each other. No idea what was wrong with dash/display.

The goods are all will be covered under warranty and, unlike the Panigale they swapped, they don't think the warping was caused by rider error. Could have been something out of spec in the front end and they are going to take a micrometer to everything while it's stripped down.

Just hope its quick because I'm missing the best riding weather of the year right now.

Shameless Plug - Melillimoto Ducati of Ocala, FL ROCKS!!!

I am also having a front brake problem... The brakes are grabby. My dealers tech rode the bike and said he doesn't feel anything wrong with the brakes! I think it's the pads that are causing the problem. I haven't taken them off for inspection yet, but pretty sure they are the problem. I will be looking for replacements.

I received letter for recall ECU update, to be scheduled in my future. Can't imagine what that is, my bike runs great. Something about startup fueling changes.

Superten, i also have that letter. Just had my bike in for service, so I called to see if it was done then. The dealer said I did not have the update, must be a major deal for them to send a letter....the could have done it at next servicing.

Like others on this board, I did have a few stalls while shifting and got limp mode on start-up a few times.

I'm sure a little smoother ride below 50 mph is out of the question.

don't know yet. Update being done with all other work so haven't tested yet.

After 2 months of waiting for brake pads to fix the issue Ducati says does not exist, I fianally called EBC in CA and asked where the pads were "oh, we haven't made them yet, no idea when" so I called my dealer and said, cancel the orde. Then called MSA Direct in the UK and had them shipped the next day. Can't wait to get new pads and a smooth brake. I will make sure the buttons are well loose and (very lightly) oiled also.
