So I started my quest into looking for some decent AUX lights to put on the Hyperstrada ... found a boat load of lights and I think everyone can have their say as to what is "good, best, good enough or a good quality vs price" ... I found what I think are some decent lights that come in a nice aluminum powder coated housing and they also look pretty cool ( subjective I know  ) and seem to be working great.

To make a long story short the mounting options for any of these generic lights are less than appealing for me to put on the Hyperstrada ... So off I went into the garage and after a few hours of drawing and cnc-ing this is what I came up with :)

Next I'll do some black powder coating to match the rest of the bike and some decent spacers between bracket and radiator cover to allow for proper torque on the mounting bolts.

your thoughts, comments, cautionary tales or suggestions please ...

That's cool! I'm glad to see other 'makers' here on the forum. What kind of CNC equipment do you have in the garage? Would love to see it.

My only caution would be to try to mount the light on the inside. It can be a little vulnerable on the outside like that to people walking by or if you have a tip-over. Other than that it's a neat design.

I hope to have my lights done really soon as I have finally been able to put time into it again. They mount similarly to yours.

CNC is something I've built a few years back ... ball screws, supported linear rails, 1.5 kw spindle with VFD, works very well with aluminum and I've done the occasional soft seel cuts as well. Works well if you'r not in a hurry.

Lights don't stick out that much in this configuration ... there's actually a lot more handlebar sticking out that someone may get caught up on. Nonetheless attached are some pics with the light mounted on the inside and the handlebars fully turned in. I guess the lighting test will tell on which side of the mount the light will go :)

I need to get these powder coated and engraved so they look the part :) Ohh and I forgot to mention that the bracket allows for pivoting which equates to 45 degrees of vertical adjustment.

What machine are you working with ?

Ahh okay cool.

I've got a Tormach PCNC1100. It's nothing compared to a proper Haas VF2 or something (but I can dream), and a step up from a DIY setup. Took me about 2 years of saving and research, and I'd like to say it has paid for itself, but no not yet. It's pretty rewarding to make things though that's for sure :)

Tormach is great stuff ... i was debating between that and a haas super mini mill but right now i am running out of space in the garage [emoji19] so i got this small cnc and a Taig lathe ... so far its been great

Love the lights and custom mounts. I'll agree with Patrick though that they're in a pretty vulnerable place. I had some lights mounted there, and it bent my radiator's support brackets during a tip over. Luckily though it all bent back straight.

Agreed a tip over would be messing up the brackets to say the least :)

Now I have to think about how to wire these things up ... anyone got any suggestions on that ?

You powdercoat at home too?

What kind of power do they take?

Indeed powdercoated at home  :)

Total of 6A @ 12V for both the lights ... Was thinking of some handle bar mounted waterproof switch and maybe a relay on a timer ... Overkill maybe ...

Oh wow thats a lot. You going to put one on the other side? That would be 12 amps.

You can hook up to a relay to a switch, or tap into the headlight signal.

Nono :D 6A for both lights 2x 3A

:)

Oh that's not bad then.

I'd get an automotive relay they are pretty simple to wire up.

Dude, pics of your home shop? Do you have a lathe too?

for other people seeing this I learned from revzilla the other day that the vast majority of ebay lights can be attached to the PIAA fender/fork mount kit.

Not sure thats the route I'm taking, but I thought it was good info to share. I didn't check yet what we would need, but it is available in m5 and m6.

PIAA Fork Mount Kit For LP270 / LP530 / RF3 Light Kits - RevZilla

wow that is a good idea :) gonna be making me some fork mounted lights as well ... I assume that these mount directly on the same bolts where the fork protectors mount ... right ?! The wiring is going to be tricky with lights mounted so low though ... bringing the wires neatly up along the forks will be challenging.
