Since the stock headlight is absolute trash on the 2016, what have you done to increase visibility at night and light up the road? Especially in the tight 1st and 2nd gear twisties?

I am thinking of retrofitting Baja Designs S2’s into the handguards for some high mounted illumination. They are only 2x3 x

1.7” deep and I should be able to cut out a rectangle above the blinker strip and find a clean way to affix them.

Thoughts?

You're on the right track. If you want to improve the stock lamp, ignore it. It's basically just a device to let other vehicles see me (I hope).

That's a cool location. They would be directional, which is cool. I would worry about:
1. Vibes. I feel them most in bars and pegs. More for shaking the beam. If you've ever seen a loose headlight lamp, it's nauseating.
2. Depth. You probably couldn't flush mount them due to lever clearance. But I don't think they would look bad sticking out.
3. Adjustability. It would be pretty challenging to mount them in a way so you can adjust the beam position.
4. Crash. Mines been dropped twice and low-sided once. Each time the handguard plastic parts exploded. Even with the beefier DP units like you have.

Would be unique and wiring wouldn't be bad.

An interesting concept, but fitting extra driving lights right next to the turn signals will make the latter almost invisible to other road users. I'd find somewhere separated from your turn signals to add lights, maybe off the inboard screw that holds the hand-guard?

It amazes me how many car manufacturers crowd lights together, with the result that the turn signals are difficult to see. VW was one of the worst with their tail lights. Then again, the average bike rider seems to regard signals as something that can be minimised virtually to nothing, so maybe I'm too fussy!

They would be used outside of typical traffic scenarios and probably seldom be used to blind oncoming traffic with 3000lm per side.

The view in periphery is horrible and freaks me out going up the canyon at night.

I could wire a switchback easily enough if they were DOT legal lights, but the plan is to reach down the road 100yds and see around corners.

I can see your need for more light: I wish I had a canyon to ride, day or night! So far, my 'Strada hasn't been out at night, so I don't know how much benefit the fitment of a decent LED H4 has been, in terms of seeing rather than being seen.

I'm concerned mountng on mirror would make the lights very "wobbly". Would drive me crazy if I'm driving and see the lights bouncing so much. alternate location to consider is outboard of the radiator.

I've had D2's mounted to fork tubes and couple types mounted to radiator shroud. No perceivable bounce or shaking with either.

Handguard, not the mirror.

Believe it or not, I mounted a sweet LED H4 from SV-4 in the housing and a Magic Shine battery powered bicycle light pumping 3500 lumens with a half decent cutoff.
