Buell Ulysses vs Hyperstrada

Don't know how much impartiality I'm going to find on a Ducati forum, but here goes. Background info: been riding since 1983, mostly Japanese inline 4 sport bikes. In 2004 I swapped my ZX10R for a 2006 Buell Ulysses because I wanted something more versatile. I loved the Uly, handled like a sport bike, all day comfortable, all the low end torque in the world, but I did not love the air cooled Harley motor and the 6800 rpm redline. I rode it for 2 years and sold it for another ZX10R. I rode that Kawi for a couple years then sold it and was bikeless for 3 years. I got the fever last fall and rode a BMW F700GS but it was very bland and not worth $11k to me. I considered the KTM 990SMT, but didn't want to spend 15 large. I ended up with another Uly, an 08, which had many upgrades over the 06. I have come, at my advanced age, to appreciate the loping stride of the big twin now, turning 3 grand at highway speeds, and the suspension is amazingly compliant. But as the weather warms up, the air cooled motor is just plain hot, even with the "comfort kit" upgrade. Also, I'm just 5'9" and even with the low seat, I can't flatfoot it.

After recently discovering the Hyperstrada, I am intrigued and wonder if it would be a good alternative to the Uly. I realize it's up near the 15 grand I didn't want to spend last year, but now I'm back into full riding enthusiasm mode and it doesn't seem that outrageous. On paper, the Hyper and the Uly seem pretty similar-the Duc has about 10 more HP but 20 fewer lb-ft; wet weight should be about 50 lb less than the Uly, but the wheelbase is 5 inches longer so I don't know that it's going to outhandle the slightly heavier Uly. The Uly has an awesome passenger perch and a lot more storage space with the Hepco Becker hard bags. The Uly is a proven element on gravel and fire roads, but my local Duc dealer tells me that the Hyper would be fine as well if shod with the proper rubber. And of course the big one tipping it in the Duc's favor is a liquid cooled engine.

Has anyone on here ridden both and can give me a valid ride comparo? Anyone put on Scorpion Trails or something like that and done much off pavement? Any useful insight would be appreciated...but please, don't just use this as an opportunity to slag off my Uly.

I have ridden and built a buell, gobs of torque right now off the line, but like you said low revs, so keep shifting.

The HyperStrada does not have the big grunt, but it is lighter and will fly through the gears about as quick, but you can take it above 9k, 10.5k is the redline. I have not been to redline yet. 6k rpm is 82mph indicated which is about 8% over actual mph.

Suspension is superb on the Buell, gonna have to mod the forks on the HyperStrada for me. I weight 185 lbs. I'm thinking I might should have taken a longer look at the SP and it's adjustable suspension, but it was SO TALL!
 
Never ridden a Buell, but always like them. The Uly is the class of bike I was shopping for but, honestly, would not buy one due to the HD motor in it's cage. This Duc motor is outstanding and the tailoring you can do with power modes is very cool.

As for flat footing it, I would take a test ride. I'm 5'8", 185 lbs and can get most of my boot down by pegging one foot and sliding over saddle on the other. Both feet has me on the balls, but plenty of purchase that I can walk it around and rock off center stand.

Fact is, suspension just doesn't give much sag. My tech's said Duc's problem is they think EVERYONE is taking their bikes racing, which might speak for tight rear but the forks are either too soft, or just don't dampen progressively enough. But, if you wanted a performance suspension, that's what the SP is for. Bike is a riot to hit twisties on, though.

Front forks and gear indicator are the only gripes I have. 800 miles of smiles otherwise. I don't this this twin will give nearly as many headaches as most HD riders I know. Oh, don't HD's get horrible milage? I'm averaging 45 with lots of full throttle blasts.
 
My mileage is typically in the mid 40s mixed riding, a little better on the highway. I can get one foot flat with the other on the peg and have enough purchase to paddle around on my toes as long as it's not up hill. Centerstand... that would be a nice thing to have. On the other hand, there isn't a chain to lube so it's not a killer to not have one.
 
I use to sell the Buells at a Harley Dealership. I had the use of the Uly for my demo bike. I liked it a lot, but it was to tall and seemed heavy. It also gave off a tremendous amount of engine heat in city driving. It does have a lot of room for the driver and a great passenger perch. I would say the Hyperstrada is way different. It feels lighter, more nimble, but depending on your size the riders seat may feel more cramped than the Uly. I think a passenger might find more room on the Uly also. I just sold a Triumph Explorer to purchase the Hyperstrada and couldn't be happier with my choice.
 
Lighter and more nimble would be good...especially lighter. My wife doesn't ride with me too often so the passenger pillion is not a deal breaker. Guess I'll have to wait for my dealer to get one in and test ride it.
 
The thing about it is that the Uly is kind of the Rodney Dangerfield of Adventure Bikes.....
 
no respect...my MSF instructor had one. None of us could figure out what it was until we asked. He joked that he was an indescive rider and the Uly lived up to that mindset.
 
It's more like a Swiss army knife...it does so many things. I was hoping this would not devolve into Uly bashing. We had been doing so well...
 
naw, man. I dug it. It looked tough, had metal luggage, and the guy did a lunch time show on it where he basically did about 50 slow figure eights in the box of pain to calm some of the beginners down about the test.

Honestly, I looked at it and thought 'that's what I'm looking for...a touring bike with balls.'
 
You will also note in the TKC80 thread that others recognize the merits of the Dunlop 616 which, I believe, was developed for the Uly.
I am so torn right now...I love my Buell but I'm not a big guy and I've always had smaller, more compact bikes. The Hyper seems like the bike I always wished the Uly was, but I'm hesitant to put mine up for sale without ever throwing a leg over the Duc. On the other hand, I don't think buyers will be knocking eachother over to get to my garage, so I probably have time to wait for my dealer to get one in.
 
Then you should get Hyperstrada!

Jer, I've got 900 miles on glorious white Strada's odometer. So, did buy one.

DM, at 5'8", I have to stretch a little before throwing a leg over the saddle & bags gracefully but, it's totally worth it. Front brake dive - my only complaint. Everything else still brings a smile to my face. Honestly, they could have sold the bike for same price without any tech or rider aides and I probably still would have bought it. The digital side of it is just fantastic, though. It's a rider's bike with a very relevant technical side which, to me, is the hallmark of a serious motor company.

I always thought of Ducati as the Ferrari of bikes, and it lives up to that in my mind. The Multi must be pure fantasy.
 
I'm in Asheville this weekend visiting my dad and I checked the web site for the local Duc dealer to check their inventory. As luck would have it, they had an HS in stock so I went down to check it out. It is tiny compared to the Uly, and with the low seat I could almost flatfoot it in my Tevas. What a gorgeous bike! They also had a Hypermotard, looked neat but too naked, and some Tiger 800s, which are about as big as the Uly. I was not willing to spring for one sight unseen, but now that I've sat on it I'm going to put my Uly up for sale and go for the HS.
 
I think overall you will be happy with the HS, but the buell is out there in a special place also. Once you get used to the HS, it becomes part of you, very nice handling and motor is sweet through the gears!
 
Wow a Buell Ulysses haven't heard that name spoken in a while. Two very different bikes...if you're going to compare the Ulysses to a Ducati it would be more suited towards the Multistrada rather than the hyper. But if you;re looking for a price point option the HS is a more affordable option. I have seen a HS with nubby tires and from what I've been told it does OK on dirt roads but it has traction control and ABS so you decide.
 
Definitely ride a Hyperstrada. It may seem small and nimble compared to the Ulli, which is a very cool multipurpose bike, but chalk and cheese except for "two wheels and two cylinders". Seems there are some great deals out there for new '13 HS and more, do shop around. The 821 engine is just fantastic, IMHO.
 
Too bad this thread is two years old...I would tell him about my Lightning Long, which was a Uly without the ADV equipment. Which was a bit of a joke, as the bike weighed close to 500 wet. A good friend ended up on the cover of Thunder Press when she took their offroad training course, must have fallen off a dozen times. Also, I've met Eric Buell; he is friendly, open, and willing to talk about bikes 24/7. A standup guy.

It was a great bike in many ways, lots of torque and nearly maintenance free. Hydraulic valve lifters, lifetime belt drive; just needed oil, filters, and tires. It came with premium Showa suspension, the best I've ever owned. The clickers actually worked, unlike my R6.

The bad: Frame roasted my legs in city traffic due to the fuel circulating in it, and I kept hitting the rev limiter. It felt much bigger between the knees and weighed 30 pounds more. I liked it, but would not swap my Strada for two of them.

BTW that Buell was $12k OTD. That was in 2006. Except for the cheap suspension, the Strada is not that bad of a deal.
 
Just read a LA Times Article about the new FZ-09. In the comparison section, the writer stated "not as nimble or responsive as a Ducati Hyperstrada".

Sweet. I feel it's still a pretty rare bike. I have yet to see another Strada on the road. Not talking Motards.
