chain adjustment

Anyone care to shed more light on wether weight should be on or off the swingarm? I watched a couple high quality Duck chain adjustment vid's and they were performed weight off.

I was informed by the head mech. when I arrived at my dealer for first checkup that my chain was too tight (I told him I tightned it according to diagram on swingarm) and he said you need to tighten it with weight as having an over-tightened chain will put stress on the counter-shaft..i.e. bad bike medicine.:D
 
That's three different methods for proper chain adjustment. Kinda scary but my bikes at the shop for an extended stay anyway. I'll have them check it.

I'm almost positive the dealership doesn't suck up 2 mechanics to adjust a chain. Most preferred method seemed to be on side stand.
 
My OEM Scorpion is pretty well done after 6700km. A couple of questions:

1) Wheel removal, the owners manual is useless...is it as simple as it looks? Remove slip-on, remove the retaining clip, remove nut, slip off wheel.

2) What have you guys been usung for second set of tires? I come from the ST world where I have been running BT 023's, Angels, and RoadSmarts the last few seasons and think any of these would be fine on the HS.

To your first question is yes just remove the clip, nut and slide the wheel off. I can't help you on the tire.

I ran the Michelin Pilot Road 2 on my Monster. But I do like the Scorpion's though.

2) What have you guys been usung for second set of tires? I come from the ST world where I have been running BT 023's, Angels, and RoadSmarts the last few seasons and think any of these would be fine on the HS.

No need to remove the Slip-on. Plenty of room to get the wheel off. Remove the safety clip, remove the axle nut, remove the wheel. I replaced my tires myself. I put on PR3's, like em a lot. The front wheel is a little tougher, remove both calipers, (its tight fit, but they will wiggle out). Loosen the axle nut, then loosen pinch bolts, then remove axle to get wheel off. The whole job including dis-mounting and mounting and balancing new tires took me about 3 hours and I took my time.

I got pretty good at taking the wheels off and on my ST2's, and you're correct the front is always more of a pain than the rear cause of the calipers. I actually looking forward to the ease of removing the rear on the HS, no axle to get all lined up with caliper bracket, wheel, sprocket carrier, etc. Never actually tried the tire change myself but a friend with a No-Mar said he would be happy to "watch" me do my own!
 
Taken from the manual.

Spin the rear wheel to find the position where chain
is most taut. Set the motorcycle on the side stand.
Press with a finger on the chain, at the point of
measurement and then release it. Measure the
distance (A) between the centre of chain link pins and
the swingarm aluminium part. It must be: A = 59 ÷
61 mm / 57 - 59 (Low Seat)

I'll need to check mine again when I get home, I didn't realise the low seat version has a different setting, I'm sure from memory that the sticker on the swingarm was for the standard hyper, but mine is the low version,Can anyone else with the low version confirm this. I'm away from home for another couple of weeks.???
 
If you're having trouble getting the rear tire to fit over the rim, don't force it. Turn the rim over and it will slide over better. It seems like the lip of the rim is much wider on one side then the other. I'm running a pilot road 2 and prefer the on road grip I have.

So did a few videos online that were describing the job on Multistrada. I am pretty sure I was turning it clockwise to do it (tighten). So is my bike assembled differently :) or that's the way Hypermotard/Hyperstrada are put together and the manual is wrong? Please help, it's driving me nuts. :)

whats the problem, just give it a try.
if it gets loose it was the wrong direction. when you tighten the chain its quite easy to recognize.
I did already tighten the chain, but i cannot remember, and for that easy job i even did not look into the manual, only for the NM of the screws, i think it was 35 or 36 NM.

That sounds about right for the wheel removal. Without looking in the garage, I think there's a decent chance that the wheel can be maneuvered past the slip on without removal.

I just put on the Pilot Road 4s and have been extremely happy. Nice turn in, feels like good grip, should wear well. They'll be nice in the rain if we ever get any again.
 
A few things after reading this thread: I saw the shop vid where they did the chain with the bike on the center stand - bone headed move - do it on the side stand.

A google search will come up with the adjustment spanner for about $14.00 - make sure it says hyperxxx 821.

The pinch bolts need to be tightened with a torque wrench at 31nm +/- 5%. They're in there pretty tight so I recommend 6 point sockets, and a short extension, to get a good grip.

No it's 31nm and if you tighten it too much you can damage the rear end.

I'm going with scorpion trail 2 tires. Lord knows why.

Will be pulling the wheels off soon - heard the rear nut can be tough to break - will be getting a breaker bar. You have to use a molybdenum disulfate grease on the nut to get proper torque.

They sell specialized sockets - I think it's critical for the front . The rear nut is 46.

Still not sure of the size of the nut or the diameter of the front axle. This is what the socket looks like: Ducati 28mm front axle nut socket

The nut is either 28mm or 30mm. Don't trust the manual on this. Any info?

Also wondering which axle alignment tool to get - size wise.
 
Not for nothing, but I've checked slack on center and side stand. It's a negligible difference in my experience. Without rider weight the shock doesn't slack that much.
 
just did a tire change monday. went with pilot road 4s. didn't use any special tools, but did take the pads out of the calipers to get them off the front rotors.

only problem we had was that we couldn't balance the rear because the ID of the wheel was much larger than our balancer. so riding with it 'unbalanced' but can't feel any vibrations. still a long way to go as I'm halfway through a 1000 mile trip this week.

Supposedly they work, and the thing I like is that, as the tire wears, they will compensate for that, if balance requirements change.

I used the zip tie method on the rear and it was a *****. I recommend a large c-clamp in order to aid getting the ties through. Tire dropped off without having to use irons.

Also, that rear axle nut can tighten up - needed a 24" breaker bar to free it.

What tools did you use?

a modified harbour freight tire changer mainly. no issues mounting or dismounting the tires from the wheels. just couldn't balance the rear because the ID is larger than the balancer shaft he has. oddly it doesn't vibrate noticeably. i figured I would have to go straight to a shop for balancing but 500 miles later I'm just thinking to do it for the mental relief.

buddy had the correct sized sockets for the axle nuts. needed an extra long breaker bar on the rear. front was practically not tight at all.

michelins feel good but I think my pressures are too high. what is everyone else running in pilot roads?
