Ducati Part 573 Safety Recall 22V704-2153

Oil Cooler Hoses for 2016-2017 Hyperstrada 939

Ducati North America has announced a safety recall for the 2016-2017 Hyperstrada 939 motorcycle. This service recall says it affects the 939 motor used from 2016-2018 in the Hypermotard/Hyperstrada families. 2017 was the final production year for the Hyperstrada, and only the Hypermotard/SP was produced for 2018.

Description

The oil cooler hoses are kept in place with a dedicated clamp support that could not guarantee a correct distance between the two hoses, with the result that during motorcycle operation could increase the rubbing and a possible oil cooler hose damage. The remedy component, a dedicated oil cooler hoses spacer, permits to keep in distance the oil cooler hoses, avoiding any contact between them. All Hyperstrada, Hypermotard, 939, and 939 SP models produced between 2015 to 2018 are included in the recall.

Production

  • Production Dates: December 10, 2015 to July 04, 2018
  • VIN Range 1: ZDM1YBJSXGB012054 to ZDM1YBJS0GB013021 (Not Sequential)
  • VIN Range 2: ZDM1YBJS9GB012028 to ZDM1YBJS3JB013909
  • VIN Range 3: ZDM1YBJS4GB012034 to ZDM1YBJS9JB013915

VIN Check

Defect

The two oil cooler hoses could contact each other causing damage to them, generating an oil leak.

Safety Risk

If the defect occurs, the oil cooler hoses could be damaged and cause an oil leak. The oil leaking could drip on the rear tire increasing the risk of crash or injury. Ducati has never received reports of crash or injuries.

Cause

The oil cooler hoses are kept in place with a dedicated clamp support that could not guarantee a correct distance between the two hoses, with the result that during motorcycle operation could increase the rubbing and a possible oil cooler hose damage.

Early Warning Signs

If the defect occurs, the oil could start to gradually seep from one cooler hose, causing leakage. The rider could find traces of oil on the floor when the motorcycle is parked.

Involved Components

Oil cooler hoses spacer: Original hoses clamp support did not provide sufficient separation of the two hoses. Therefore we’ve added a dedicated spacer.

Chronology

  • On October 2021 Ducati has received a report from the field about an oil leaking form the oil cooler hoses, and after started the investigation.
  • During this investigation, Ducati became aware of a total worldwide of 19 field cases, of which eight cases from USA.
  • None of these cases involved any crash or injuries.
  • The result of the investigation has defined the root cause as in rare cases, multiple particular condition of use and after considerable mileage of motorcycle use, the two oil cooler hoses could contact between them and eventually damage.
  • Ducati has identified the motorcycles that could have been affected by the problem.
  • On September 20, 2022, Ducati Motor Holding's internal safety commission decided to launch a recall campaign to address this condition in the affected population.

Remedy

Ducati North America will notify dealers and owners of this recall in accordance with the notification schedule. Dealers will be instructed to install an oil cooler hoses spacer, free of charge, per Ducati North America Recall Bulletins, which will be published to the Ducati Dealer Network using the established communication process.
  • The remedy component, a dedicated oil cooler hoses spacer, permits to keep in distance the oil cooler hoses, avoiding any contact between them.
  • Requests for reimbursement for pre-notification repairs will be considered in accordance with Ducati’s general reimbursement plan on file with the agency.

So i called the dealer earlier this week and was told they would call me back once they had the parts in hand. They called back today and told me that Ducati doesn't have any bits to do the actual recall so she can't book me in yet.

When i enter my bike VIN number, Ducati says that i've to do this recall but i think there is a problem on the ducati's web site.
My HM is a 2018 model and on the Ducati parts catalog i can see this :

The part number 10 is not the same as previous models, number 12 (with 10 and 11) :

The recall consist to add the "A" part like that :

and as you can see it's impossible to add this spacer with the hoses clamp i have on my 2018 HM.
Seems that Ducati known the problem in 2017 and changed the parts on 2018 models...but then why makes a recall 5 years later and why included 2018 models??

The recall states that the spacer is only added onto those bikes that have the grommet.
If yours doesn't have the grommet, but instead has the clip, it would seem that no action is required. It's probable that Ducati changed the design as they may have been aware of the opportunity for wear but until someone made it a safety issue, no recalls were created. Here's a screenshot from the paperwork i received for my recall which was done last week.

Yeah, I looked at mine, saw I had the clip and that the lines were not touching and decided to ignore the recall.

I have only seen one mention of an issue with these lines and that was somewhere on a FB post i believe. Kinda makes you wonder how the recall ever came about.

And how is it possible that this recall concerns bikes like mine which have a clip incompatible with the recall procedure

Perhaps it's one of those situations where the clip was instituted mid model year and can't be traced by VIN. They may have switched design but kept using the original supply of grommets until they ran out. The design of your clip seems to be a less expensive alternative with fewer parts and less expensive materials. The change could have been motivated by the money saved with the newer design.

The paperwork i have is from Ducati North America, i have no idea what documentation is provided elsewhere in the world. Nor do i know if Ducati even has to honour recalls elsewhere.

If you look up the NHTSA documentation, you can find this.

I'm the third owner and makes the service myself, so Ducati has no way to contact me for this recall.
But when i used my bike's VIN the recall is on, so you're probably right.

Yah, i'm the third owner of mine. I had to send proof of registration to Ducati North America to get into their data bank. Otherwise, i stumbled upon the recall on another website. I never would have known otherwise.
