Pipes....

Hi , new 939 owner here.

What exhausts are people using and why ?

Having looked at the Termi options, both slip -on and full systems, I don't actually like the look of them !

I think I will go the route of a slip-on, purely for looks and sound.

so, who has what, and what made you decide ?

I looked through ALL the options for weeks and decided to keep the stock pipe. None of them really looked 'right' to me, except for the Termi low and Termi high, which are very expensive. I think the Termi low looks the best.

Mine is stock and will remain. I did run a Termi for about two weeks. I'd suggest leaving it stock.

1 - The stock "pipe" is pretty loud already, anything louder makes you a ********* IMO
2 - The only decent looking aftermarket exhaust is the Termi and its way overpriced
3 - The performance increase is negligible if there is one at all
4 - Your money would be 100x better spent on suspension upgrades

My $.02

I've had the SC Project slip on Oval Silencer-Low Position in carbon fiber with carbon cap for two years on my 2014 Hyperstrada. I really like the look of it compared to the stock silencer and other aftermarkets, and it accentuates the engine sound without being excessively loud. Would do it again.

Same dilema

hey @stevebgt1:

Also have a 939 and I have spent the entire season debating on an aftermarket exhaust. I too am strictly buying for appearance and sound as well. Do I stay stock? To pay the Termi Tax or Not? Decisions, decisions!

Not sure how many miles you have on your bike, but over time the stock exhaust note does get better as the packing settles. However, to me it's still slightly lacking as a) the note isn't quite right and b) the stocker still looks kinda huge IMO.

SC project recently released a new pipe for the Hyper range and for me, aesthetically, this pipe nails it:

(See it here)

Some guy on ducati.ms installed one and cautions that it's LOUD and to beefs point - being the guy with an annoyingly loud pipe makes you... well, annoying.

But man, that thing is aces! For me, I think it's between that pipe and the termi.

Let us know how you make out.

I think the Akra a perfect balance of looks/sound/cost. I've never run a stock exhaust on... pretty much anything since I was 15 though... and that's a lot of different vehicles.

So I am a bit biased. It's always the first thing I change.

I have the raised Termi on my 2014 Hypermotard and I love it. There are dirt cheep through an Australian outlet currently. $999 AUD. Search for Alessi Motorcycles.

Don't discount better flow if you have other breathing mods and getting rid of the heavy and restrictive catalytic converter. Slip-on gains for bikes aren't as noticeable as putting a cat-delete system on a car, but that's mostly because gains are proportional. So, car engine with 3x's output = bigger number on paper than a bike.

Been researching and hunting the pipe market and here's my take FWIW. Definitely don't buy one without a DB Killer insert.
1. REMUS - Affordable; Mid-pipe included; DB killer; Not ugly but not really pretty
2. Akra - Pricey; Mid-pipe not included; Full-system available; Great quality; DB Killer; Looks as good as any other Akra
3. Termi's - Insane price tag; Balanced sound; Full-system available for price of a black market kidney; I kinda like the look but the image soon gets clouded with dollar signs bleeding

The SC's and other contenders just look like little noise generators and I don't much care for the tiny trumpet design. I really want a pipe but think finding a used one is the smartest buy. Seriously, look up the blue book on a 2014 Hyper. Spending 1/4 of the net value of your machine on an exhaust is akin to a Honda Civic with $5K in wheels and tires. The used Termi's get in the ballpark and the owners tend to take very good care of them. Still wouldn't buy one because in my experience, manufacturer performance divisions charge too much and try to abide emission and noise regs.

Count me a reformed exhaust tamperer. Both my Panigale and HS are on their stock systems after years of ripping out cats and adding decibels. It allows me to lie straighter in bed at night knowing I'm not poking out as many toxins. And both bikes sound pretty inspiring to me.

From what I read here, looks like 939 stock pipe is quieter than 821. For me 821 pipe is pretty much perfect. Mellow enough when I'm cruising, and it can get mean and peppy when I rev up.

I would say go with the Akrapovic, we picked up a great deal for my wifes 2014 Hyperstrada 821 from SoloMoto with the Mid-Pipe, Installed it and then had the ECU flashed by Moto-Wheels and her bike is awesome.
Power and looks great.

In answer to Tron (above) , the bike only has 1700 miles on it just now. I think its too quiet. There again, I have always put aftermarket pipes on my bikes. I think the SC Project ones look awesome, but, is theirs just a slip on ? I thought it came with a link pipe and some fancy gadget that remaps it too ? I will run the bike for another 1000miles or so, and see if I am happy with the sound. After all, like some of you say, the money is better spent on other mods. Aesthetically, I don't think the stock pipe actually looks too bad, it may be big, but it is well designed and suits the bike.

I fitted a Leo Vince Nero, it was cheap at £250 and they make a great noise with the baffle in or out and the exhaust flapper valve disconnected :D

Another Akrapovic voter here.
Good balance I find. Not too far away from stock but just a wee bit meatier. ( baffle out )
Apart from the sound I wasn't sure about the look initially, however I think it does look better in the flesh. Photo's just don't do it justice.

Personally I think this looks superb......

Gonna have a think in the spring...after a few more miles on the stocker....

Hi mate,

I 100% agree. This SCP one looks the part. !

Been on their website to check it out and it appears to come with a link pipe and some electrical device that alters the mapping ?
I don't wanna go down that road really....I wonder if you can just buy the slip on muffler on its own ? It looks superb !

Doesn't come with the AFM unit, that's purchased separately.

Yeah but , do they recommend it ?
Having said that, if it IS just a slip on, you normally don't have to mess about with settings anyway.....

Their website only shows it for the motard 939. I am assuming the exhaust system is exactly the same on the Strada 939 ???
