Please Help Before My Hyper Kills Me...

While riding my 2013 Hyperstrada this afternoon, my throttle repeatedly remained open in spite of me shutting it completely. Effectively, the bike was whiskey throttling me (or put another way, I had an unwanted cruise control). The only way I found to drop the RPMs, was to pull in the clutch. However on a few occasions, even a completely pulled in clutch and closed throttle did not reduce the RPMs. When that happened, the bike was dangerously close to redline and the only way to get the engine to settle was to shift the transmission back down (without ever letting the clutch out) and then very slowly release the clutch. What on earth is happening and how can it be fixed???

What makes it worse, is that this was the first time I've ever ridden the Hyper; I bought unseen and had it delivered while I was overseas. So, I just got back and found the bike unable to start, owing to my sister inadvertently leaving the lights on for three days. Yesterday, I was able to jump the bike, but I could not ride it off. The RPMs would just fall off and it would stall. The dash displayed a battery error ("low"), so I hooked it to a battery charger for about 24 hours. When I checked it this afternoon, the battery voltage was 13.4, but the bike still would not start. I jumped it again, this time it did not stall, so I rode it and experienced the above throttle problem.

After about an hour of the throttle issue, I decided to switch the bike off and chance starting it again. It started right up, but the throttle issue remained. No errors are present and I have reset the rising modes through the menu. Does anyone have ANY ideas what this could be? Please help. Thank you.

And the throttle unit recall would resolve the symptoms I described?

It's the best and cheapest way to start I know that much! :D

Usually recalls are safety related. Your issue sounds like a serious safety issue. So yeah.

I would not disagree in the slightest. My first ride on this awesome beast and it tries to kill me. Figures.

I'll call the Duc dealer tomorrow to get an appt for the recall. Thanks for the suggested starting point.

Yes have the throttle recall done and if it was me, :D I would put a new battery in it. Just can't trust one that has been killed.

Dealer confirmed there's an open recall on my hyper for the throttle. It's going in on Thursday. Let's hope that fixes the problem.

The throttle recall wasn't to fix stuck open condition. It was actually for limp-mode issues. I can only recall maybe one other story on this forum where a guys throttle hung up a bit after he released it.

A runaway FBW throttle is pretty serious. I would have your shop investigate deeper than just doing the recall.

Hmmm. I will tell them when it goes in tomorrow. FWIW, I took the bike out for a brief spin last night and did not experience the throttle issue. The throttle is incredibly choppy, which makes for a very unpleasant ride. So either I need to acclimatize to the ride by wire or there is some issue with my throttle unit. I'm about to take it out for a longer run now. We'll see how it does.

Out of a 45 min ride of mixed city stop/go and highway, the hyper acted up for about 5 mins. It started out ok and then the throttle locked open a few times, but then smoothed out and behaved the rest of the way. I'm thoroughly confused.

That was mine, and it happened more than once before I got mine replaced.

And your ghetto cruise control issue was fixed with the throttle recall? Did you have other issues? Mine seems to have issues with surging power. It's quite uncomfortable (and obviously dangerous) to ride.

It did fix my hang throttle.

Boomstick, where do you have the riding mode set? Try turning it down to "Touring or even "Rain" and see what happens. My first test ride was at "Sport" and I found the bike nearly unrideable with the throttle's limp spring and short turn.

But yes that bike should go to the dealer, and be sure to get an owner's manual if the bike did not come with one.

Coming from the Hyper 1100 to this bike, I thought the throttle was pretty smooth.... :D

I have no experience with this, but since it is fly by wire, the throttle control is the first place to start and then just work your way back until every bit inline has been replaced.

tbh though, it sounds like you have sensor or ecu issues which are making the ecu think the bike is doing something it isn't. luckily the throttle is the first thing to replace and its free!

Good news, I just got back from the dealer and the throttle recall seems to have fixed my sticky throttle issue. It also evened out the power delivery a lot more. That said, these bikes have silly amounts of torque and the ride by wire is not my favorite. Power delivery is definitely more aggressive in its on/off than my Triumph Daytona 675R, but the power is more linear.

To address some questions, I flipped between sport and touring and urban when trying not to die with the sticky throttle. It's currently in touring. And my understanding is that touring doesn't cut the power from sport mode, it only adjusts the DTC and ABS settings to allow more wheel slip for backing into corners, etc.

Touring mode still gives you the 110HP just like Sport but the throttle response is softer, et. less on/off. It can also effect the ABS and DTC if you have the settings different.

Try it for a while going into Urban mode with slow throttle response and 75HP.

I always get a wake up call when I jump from the Ural to the Hyper. :D

It softens the throttle response. The modes are covered in the manual as to what the difference is.
