Side stand antics

Hi Renny,

Sorry to hear that you are at the end of your tether on your bike. Not that it helps you now, but did you have any idea of the history of the machine? Seems I was lucky to get my 821 'Strada from its first owner who had successfully toured two-up on it and fancied a return to big old Jap iron. How he coped with the suicide clutch action I don't know, but most of the mods since I've had it have been in the way of refinement, rather than problem-solving. I just hope that will continue when the riding season resumes, and I'll get the chance to enjoy the work on the starter motor and coil-sticks done in the last few months. There are few bikes in my garage that excite me as much as the HS!
Yo Nick, thanks for the sympathy card!
My main reason to go with another exotic (#1 was KTM1290gt, ferocious when it was running) was my good bud from PA who had nothing but good things to say about his HS. It happened to be the earlier 821 at which point I had no knowledge, nor was I inclined to check, the varied issues that abound in subsequent years. Yes, the gal that sold me the bike, with 2700 miles on it, said she was doing more dirt bike and mountain bike riding. Of course it’s easy to fabricate any story that appears worthy!
Now, do I drop more $$$ just to have it diagnosed? Once I go that route I’ll prob hang on to it if it works like a HS should.

There's a really extensive thread on a member that had weird running issues associated with fuel ups. Other than that, not a lot of known problems with general idle and such. Pretty much runs or doesn't. Mine gets a little rpm hunt after running it hard on the highway but I have so many mods it's probably my own doing.

My hope that what ever it is doesn’t stump the service dept. with one of those, gee, we’ve never seen this before. But you still owe us 4 hours of shop time!

Gatdammit has reminded me of one little niggle on my HS, on which I run the Rapid Bike Easy tuning module. When I shut the throttle rapidly to decelerate for a corner, the motor seems to think it's going to stall, and brings the revs back up a little. Maybe the bike thinks I'm being too timid! My Ducati guru says this is a common issue in bikes of this age and not worth worrying about so I don't, much.

Mine will sometimes stall or recover and bump the revs when I pull in the clutch with the throttle fully closed and engine braking, started after a tune with the T800, my understanding is you need to reset the TPS which I haven't had done yet.

Whatever the case, the bike is currently unlivable! Also, reviewing Easy Tune, the bike is sometimes is brought to “acceptable” levels, others say nay!

Nate, Nick, at least I know I'm not crazy. The TPS reset is definitely a new lead. Mine was only reset/ replaced when she was very young and I was having the early limp mode/ stalling issue.

T800 was "good enough" for me. You could check out a shop that does tunes like Openflash Performance Inc. - ECU Diagnostic and Reprogramming Tools (local ask for a guy named Shiv Pathak, or Pasta Performance (bit of a trek to Sacramento). I have also heard that in some cases it is the traction control fighting with you, might be worth a test to turn it off in order to see if things improve.
Nate, I finally bit the bullet. Taking Hyper to Marin Speed Shop on Thursday. My review will be forthcoming!

After whining only hours ago about the bike in the shop for three weeks, I get a call that she’s ready! Tomorrow will tell!

A big, albeit, expensive sigh of relief! Picked up the bike today and it appears to be behaving as the engineering design plans intended. Smooth on takeoff, quickly back to normal idle when stooped, throttle response linear!
Culprit-this is hard to take- clutch micro switch that not only made engine starts in gear impossible, but confused the cpu into initiating false inputs that, as aforementioned, made her almost unrideable. ASV aftermarket clutch lever also received bad reviews from the tech. Instruction #1: do not adjust the clutch lever! If further problems arise, go to a oem lever!

Good to know! I had issues with that switch when I went to Pazzo levers, but it was on the opposite end, the bike thought the clutch was constantly pulled in so it'd act normal up until 8500 rpms when you'd slam into a wall as the bike tries to cut power thinking the engine is being revved to redline without any load. Fiddling with the metal spring thta actuates the switch helped but I have to be careful not to rest my fingers on the lever in between shifts otherwise I can accidentally actuate the switch resulting in a less than graceful attempt at redline. Glad you got it sorted!

Very good news Renny, and it could surely have been MUCH more expensive regardless of the price of that dratted switch. Now I'm sure we all hope that you get to have the fun you expected and deserved when you bought your bike!

Ride safe,

Nick

As they say, thanks for the support, guys! I’m actually looking at racking up some fun miles both straight and curvy! It’s a different bike!
