Sudden engine stop

Hi everyone!

Today I experienced sudden engine stall when I decreased speed at the red light.
The day before yesterday, I experienced same thing at toll gate on freeway when I speed down.
(in Japan, it is not free)

Does anyone have same experience and know solution?
I want to know before going to 11 days trip to northern territory nature land.

I will try some flat dirt ride there but am afraid of sudden death.

Best regards,

HiroTokyo

It happened 2 times: 1st time, I shifted down from 2 to 1 while filtering the traffic I was doing 30m. Second time I was at the traffic light, playing with throttle at neutral, it stalled. It is something to do with throttle I guess.

I've noted the rpm's getting very low occasionally downshifting while slowing to a stop in lower gears, but never stalled.

I had it happen to me once, but thought at the time I just didn't pull the clutch in intime while coming to a stop. I had ear plugs in so didn't hear the engine rpm at the time. I think I had about 300 miles on it at the time. Have not had a problem since.

Thanks guys,

Today I brought my HS to the local dealer I bought it for 1000km check.
After hearing my statement, they talked with Ducati Japan and updated ECU.
I hope that will be solution.

Kind regards,

HiroTokyo

Hiro-san, I will get HS in August but have gotten nervous about engine-stop. Did you see it again after ECU update?

I can repeat it on my bike after 2 ecu updates. If it stalls loaded cold (pulling away from a parking stall) it will be a hard restart or if it stalls shortly after filling. Wait 5 or so minutes and it will start again.

Dear DD1200-san,

After ECU update and 300km so far, it has not happened again.
I will report if it happens again.

Regards,

HiroTokyo

Thank you for the replies. Though it might happen, I will definitely love HS! Hardly wait to see my HS!!!

Well during my test ride yesterday it inly stalled once when I took off for rhe first time but started right up and I was able to play in thparking lor before taking off. Except for me missing the low end torque of my F650 at first, it was so much fun I didn't want to go back to the dealer. Urban mode to start was a great ice breaker. Loved the touring mode and maybe sport would be great in the twisties but none to be had and with some more time behind the bars on the throttle. Coming from 13 year old carbs on a thumper to hot fly by wire FI wow! The bike flys even with my big frame on it. Fits better than I thought and complaints are the grips are too thin for my big hands and the Multi's adjustable windshield. Love being able to see right down to road in front and just handles like it's a part of your body even just after jumping on her. So now I have to find a way to convince my CFO to part with the funds.....

Mine didn't want to start the day after I brought it home from the dealer. It was hauled back and it took them two weeks to find the problem. The ECU was updated and a faulty wire that had upset the ECU was replaced. This problem hasn't reocurred since.

Since getting mine back from dealer for unrelated work about 3 weeks ago, the idle bounces erratically when I release throttle pull clutch. Thought maybe my Grip Puppies were making throttle stick, but they weren't. It usually starts as high idle, around 2200 rpm, then drops too low, around 1200, before finally settling to normal 1500-ish. I've had it stall once when coasting to a stop.

The outside air temp has gotten quite a bit warmer. That's the only thing that has changed since dealer work, which only looked at brakes.

I think I had my first experience with this yesterday. I say "think" because I stalled at a traffic light the way new riders will often do when learning to pull away from a stop. I haven't had one of those in 5 years!!

I was a bit tired, so it's possible - as in theoretically possible but very not likely - that I just let the clutch out too much without giving it any throttle, but I really [really really] don't think so. I'm pretty sure that the microsecond the friction point was met, it simply died.

Anyone else had a stall that had the earmarks of a classic beginners clutch miscue except it really wasn't?

[BTW: I'm wondering if this is what happened to FBoldcrow above???]

cheers!

Had a roll away stall, but I was messing with clutch cable adjuster and my friction point was all over the place.

Also had another clutch in stall while decel'ing for stop light. My idle is just off, feels like when the MAF is bad/dirty on a car.

Oh, yeah, I hear you there.

Even though I'm currently in the 3-4 mm range, a tiny twist of the adjuster really changes where in the lever's "throw" the friction point comes on. To be honest, I like the feel of the engagement better when there's a little more free play than 4 mm - say around 5.5 or 6 mm - but I don't want to risk running something out of spec. In other words, I like to feel the clutch engage relatively early in the throw, but Ducati seems to have other ideas.

Engine stall

I had a stall while shifting down on a down hill approach to a roundabout. I was doing nothing different to any other day on the same roundabout. It felt like a seizure.

I switched off, checked the oil and started it up again without further issue.

I have also noticed the engine stop light blink during shifts when starting off with a cold engine.

Other than this its the most perfect all round bike that I have owned in 40yrs of riding

I've had 3 or 4 stalls on higher gear downshifts. I just toe up a gear and clutch it back to life.

I also usually get a red blink between gears. Always thought it had something to do with traction control as you take power off the rear.
