Knee-jerk reaction: poor battery/earth connections.

I doubt that has anything to do with engine cooling. It looks like combustion well into the exhaust pipe, and must be due to incorrect fueling or possibly the exhaust valve being held open too long. That needs to be sorted very quickly before you ride again!

Does anyone here have both a 698 mono and an 821/959 Hyperstrada/Motard? It would be interesting to have some comparative comments! Obviously, the twins have more power but also more weight. Otherwise, they are very similar in style.

As I understand it, the system should charge well above 13V with the engine running, so either the alternator or more likely the regulator/rectifier are shot, and your battery is being let down. Older Ducatis had poor cable and/or connections between the two, but I'd hope recent ones were...

Good question which I can't answer, but our road conditions generally need softer long-travel suspension, not stiffer. Your comment also takes the shine off any desires I have for the 698!

Wise move! May be worth adding some foam blocks underneath it to hold it forward a little and provide a crumple zone before any stone impacts the matrix.

All the bikes I've ever seen have the lock mechanism at the rear, wherever the keyhole is.

If that's where the lock is, some adjustment is needed! Maybe the cable, if it has one, is too tight?

Nice designs, and I'd fancy a 698 set up for something other than youthful hooligan riding. One proviso would be a seat that looked less like a plank and didn't limit riding range!

Further to your query about the revs dropping, I think I mis-remembered the situation with my HS (I haven't ridden it this winter). I now recall the engine management actually raises the revs just when I'm trying to decelerate. My guru says that happens on a lot of modern Ducatis. Maybe yours...

Made of light alloy and perhaps broken by some bad alignment/strain issues? Looks difficult to repair. If you could make a similar section from steel to fit, an epoxy adhesive like JB Weld with a self-tapping screw for reinforcement might do the job. Good luck!

The revs dropping when the throttle is closed is common. The difficult hot start is often associated with voltage problems due to the imminent failure of the original starter motor. You'll find details in the files but you need to source a decent Denso starter motor that is much higher quality...

There's always a way to repair anything! Has the radiator taken a hit, or the bushing hole just cracked? It would need another plate bolted to it, since you wouldn't want to use heat on it.

What you can apply by hand with a standard hex/allen key. Too much and you'll crack the cap or at least bend it.

That's one LONG beak! And no front guard/fender at all. It'd be a pity to see that special motor covered in road grime. But of course, no such stuff happens in Italy!
