Hey guys, first post here. After about 18 years of riding, over 200k miles of touring, and about 35 different bikes (at different times), I’m considering buying a Hyperstrada today. Come down to a very low mile 2013 or 2014 model. The 2013 has 2 open recalls on it and the 2014 one. I think the 2014 is the Can Protection Filter and the 2013 has this as well plus replacement of the throttle control. I assume both of these bikes are relatively similar with no major changes between the 2 years except maybe (?) some fixes on the 2014? Just wondering. I’ve previously had a GT1000 and a 1200 Multi, the latter I really liked but just found it slightly too top heavy and kinda big for me. I put in about 45k pleasing miles on a previous 950SM and I prefer the mortard setup to the Multi, though it was a great bike. Any input appreciated. I’d like to purchase a bike this week.

I think both those years have similar known issues. The Can Protection Filter is a critical one as the lack of it can cause the ECU and or Dash to get fried. The throttle position sensor was indicated in some rough running situations. Get the bikes warm during a test ride and see how it starts. While not a specifically a warranty item the starter is weak on these and in some cases can go bad making starting when warm very difficult (a little extra time starting when warm is normal). Also, some folks reported the clutch was grabby on these years and there was (is?) an upgraded clutch pack you could find on eBay to improve feel. There are threads to cover all these issues and the fixes on the forum here so plenty of info if you get either bike and need to address anything. I've had two of em so far, started on a base 2015 and upgraded to a 2018 SP for the weight loss and improved suspension components, put about 10k on the first one and I have 20k on the SP.

I'm happy with my 2013 HS, but have done quite a few fixes to improve it, as in the clutch, fuelling, plug coils and starter motor. I'd suggest that you looked for a 2015/2016 version if possible, because at least the clutch will be much improved in action over the earlier years. Even if the 1200 Multi was put on a crash diet, it wouldn't come close to the neat and nimble style of the HS, and don't under-estimate the performance of the 821cc motor!

Appreciate the input here. Stupid question, does the dash issue(s) affect only certain years of the hyperstrada/hypermotard?

It's supposedly fixed with the 939, so, 2016 on I think? My 2015 got the can bus filters installed so it was still an issue then.

Are these extremely low mile bikes? The TPS tech advisory has been out since 2013, maybe 2014. I would just get a really solid maintenance history report if tech updates this old haven't been done.

The can bus filter is a crap shoot. I had one of the 1st HM's sold in Florida in 2013 and *maybe* got the can bus filter in 2018, with no issues to that point. I say maybe because I picked it up from an Italian dealership and the manager spouted off a bunch of stuff about recalls and I could only understand some of it. He was definitely pointing at the dash, though.
