Blew out the rear today. Must have picked up something nasty as it resulted in about a 3/4" gash and was heavy enough to crack the rear hugger. Doubt it can be plugged and I'm searching for a place to swap it out. I was doing about 80 when bike started drifting slowly from side to side and slowing as I pulled over slowly while the bike remained controlled and stable. I knew right away what it was and got use my hazard light function for the 1st time.

Question: Are these Skorpion Trail's special? There are two specialty compounds for 180/55/17's on a couple site: a "dual-compound" and a "K-spec dual compound". Manual says nothing special and all I can find on the sidewall is a free-floating letter "K" near the Pirelli logo.

My dealer is closed today so no help there.
 
180 is the width in mm, 55 is a % of your width for how tall the tire is, and the 17 is the rim size, all measurements taken from the Center of the bead. Just in case anyone wonders. I beleive K spec is how the tire is compounded. It won't affect how the tire fits just how it performs and no one makes a really bad tire, just tires for a different purpose.
If it helps any for my next tire I'm going with the Michelin road 3, I don't need any or much off road ability so this tire has an awesome Center compound to resist that flat spot in the middle and soft outer compound to keep grip in lean angles. Hard to see from here but it doesn't look like you have much of a chicken strip on that tire..
 
I just want to fit the OEM rear it came with, but a couple sites list "dual-compound" or "K-spec" as options for the 180/55/17 Skorpion Trail. I'm only getting twisted about it since I know car manufacturers can get quite silly with special ratings and compounds.

Chicken strip was 1/4" territory on left side; little thicker on right. Just minutes before blowout I was abusing a round-about. I was getting very comfy with limits of this tire. Only had 3K miles, too.
 
Duel compound means there is two different levels of softness to a motorcycle tire. The center strip applicable to straight a ways is of a harder compound for longer ware the sides are of a softer compound for better gription in the turns...

A few sites have slated this tyre, apparently notorious for punctures!!!!

That's interesting but I don't see how a tire can be more prone to punctures. I mean, I hit a piece of metal at 80mph and it dug in enough to hang on until contacting the rear hugger. Just bad luck.

Also, if it's a popular factory tire, wouldn't it have more punctures on record?

I'm just commenting on the info I found when researching this tyre.
Just seems that a lot have had punctures with this tyre and some have had multiple punctures, guys that have ridden for years and never had punctures before. It seems prone more if ridden on gravel tracks though.
 
Never had a flat or puncture on my scorpions in 8 (rear) and 13 (front) thousand miles.
 
Solid numbers, Crow! I read 10k for rear is avg and front a bit more. That's still tires once a year with my milage. Damn blowout is just un-economical...
 
Pirelli Angel Sport Touring at revzilla maybe has 4.8 cust satisfaction in your size but call about the Hyperstrada spec they list on the scorpions.
