I went for a 70 mile ride a couple of days ago and mid way the bike started to cut out and in regularly. sometime very briefly and sometime for a few seconds at a time. Eventually it stopped all together and I had to pull over turn it off and back on again to get it to start. It didn't sound like it went through it normal clicks and whirs but did start first go. A few miles later it did the same again and again it didn't sound right but started on the button first go. A few miles later just before getting home it did it again with the same result.

In my garage I've found it starts ok but the whir of the exhaust valve is missing on turning it on. All the other sounds appear right and there are no warning lights on.

any ideas?

The main culprit for a lot of this stuff is the TCU which is under unofficial recall - ie: "we won't notify you if yours is a problem, but if you figure it out we'll replace it for free".

The fact that no warning lights go on is a sign that this may be the issue.

i had the same problem with mine .... gave it the berrys and it cut out twice .I took it back to ducati and they did a software update and reset the throttle control unit . i then used it and it missed a couple of times since.
I took it back to ducati again and they checked to see if it still had the earlier tcu fit , which it does . I am awaiting the new one from ducati as we speak.

TCU? Traction Control Unit?

Where is it?

Throttle control unit: It's in the throttle handle. They have to check the serial number of the unit - not the bike - to see if it's from the faulty batch. It's all free - it's just time.

Appliance, This is starting to sound right. On a constant throttle it was fine it was only when I was accelerating that it would cut out and to start with I could get it back after a couple of seconds by coming on and off the throttle. The last thing that was done by the dealer only recently was the throttle recall replacement and ever since I can't change riding mode on the move. It doesn't recognise the throttle is close and the brakes released.

hmmm - sounds like they did something wrong - that throttle replacement is what I'm talking about. I'd definitely have them give it a second look. If the throttle position sensor isn't working, it can only guess what you're doing - this seems to be what's going on.
Generally it goes into a default mode and you won't be able to go above about 55-60 mph.

Sounds like the throttle position sensor needs to be reset

Which I just realized appliance already said. :D

I took the bike out not going far from home but ran for about 30 mins without any repeat. The closest dealer is 150 miles away so I'll keep extending my range until I see if it was a one of or something that needs addressing sooner. It still doesn't recognise the throttle closed position to allow mode changes on the go but it shuts off to idle just fine.

Well that is my summer of bike riding over and done with...After losing out on the best few weeks of decent weather this year due to waiting for the throttle parts,
i have just been informed that the parts will not be at the ducati factory until 24/8 2016,
just as i go away on my holidays.
So that rules out the whole of august too.
They had better be bloody free when they arrive.

i feel ya. i lost out on the first month and a half. Only have managed to put about 3k miles on the bike this summer which is lame!

Now the 4th september and still no sight of parts yet. not impressed . i was supposed to be on a weeks riding trip around Scotland now.
On another depressed note , i ordered a new barrel and piston from Mallossi for my n.s.r 80 at the beginning of august and have just been told that will not be here until at least 15th september . Bloody europeans take the whole of august off as holidays ,no wonder it is in recession ,lazy buggers.
