"Error" and all dash lights flashing, Fan Turns on, No Start...

Well you can add me to the list of 2013 disco victims. My warranty expired last May so I was very concerned, but ducati is going to pay for the whole thing, coils ECU and dash all covered!
glad Ducati will cover your repair, my Ducati dealer mentioned that Ducati Italia tends to cover these kind of factory defects even outside the warranty (+ few months). shame from 2015 you can't buy extended warranty for Ducati

Christmas lights happened to me last weekend. Engine won't start and fan blowing. Turned of the ignition, tail light and rear turn signals flashing. Bike is now at the dealer. They can't read the ECU and asked if I had the bike serviced by a non-Ducati technician. Of course no. They say they have to check the ECU. I forwarded some of the messages here to help them out. Glad it is still under warranty. Merry Christmas to me!

Did you have the throttle recall done?

I'm not sure. Had a software update when my odometer read blinking dash line.

Btw, this is how the dash looked like.

I'm just worried because the dealer is questioning the battery tender and horn I place which was both directly connected to the battery.

I had the exact thing happen with mine (errors/fan). I'm sorry to say, but I'd be willing to bet a fair amount that a coil went bad and took out your dash along with it. Here's the details from my experience:

2013 821 coil pack failure - my story - Ducati.ms - The Ultimate Ducati Forum

as of the technician of my garage its the coil of the front cylinder which fails and takes dash and ecu with it.
so i will change it at 15000 km service as a precaution. as of him the coil of the back cylinder is not involved. strange, but he means thats definitly so.

When mine went at 8500 miles, Ducati replaced both the front and back (the front coil was also my failure point).

A friend of mine had this happen and ducati replaced it for free - good on them. What I don't understand is why they make people jump through hoops on this and the TCU - issue a recall and deal with it.

This is not how a purported luxury brand should treat its purported luxury customers. Luxury is more than charging more money, and dealership floorspace; it is about following through on the user experience, which entails something other than "every man out for themselves."

what we do not know - how many % of all 821 or HS are affected ?
is it only 10%, i understand Ducati. Would it be 50%(what i doubt), i am sure Ducati would do an official recall.

You're very forgiving. So let's say they sold 5000 of these bikes; you're saying that 500 paying customers should be left in the dark about a known issue and go through the anxiety and anger involved.

All the while ducati knows damned well they sourced bad parts, did a cost benefit analysis, and arrived at "screw em."

I'm not OK with that. Unless you're a stock holder I don't know why someone would be - and even then I'd question it. I'd question it because there's the internet, and there's ducati's rep for unreliability, for which this behavior does it no favors.

Well guys. As some of you may have figured out from my... rant last night... (sorry about that) It looks like this problem has happened to me. :( I have a couple months left on the warranty. Unfortunately the nearest dealer to me is literally 3 or 4 hours away. I'm going to see if Ducati Roadside Assistance will get it there without me paying so much...

Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks all.

A timeline might be helpful to you: Based on my experience, it's going to take them a couple days to test the bike (testing, sending error logs to DNA and then getting a response) even if you tell them exactly what the problem is and point them to posts like these. After that, it'll take about a week to get parts from Italy. My dealer had it back together immediately after getting the parts (I think it was a 1.5 hour to put it back together). They should take care of any outstanding service work at the same time (they automatically checked mine upon arrival).

Thanks Paradox... Luckily I have a friend who will help me tow it. Something tells me it would be too expensive to tow with Ducati Roadside Assistance, but I'm going to check. I'm pretty frustrated. Honestly, I think I'll see about trading her in while I'm there. I absolutely love the bike and I know "every bike has issues", but this is the first issue I've ever had like this on any bike I've ever owned. She has like 3,500 miles. I wonder how much this repair would have been had I discovered it in the Spring (post warranty) :(

Also- any chance this is just a dead or dying battery? I ask because my buddy is apparently talking to a Ducati guy right now and that's what he suggested. He said it could cause these types of symptoms if the battery gets below 11 volts. I will add that yesterday before I discovered this problem, I had her on a battery tender. I took her off the tender- to go for a ride. Noticed the issue. (errors, blinking dash, etc.) So I left it off the tender. This morning I tried to start it again just to see what would happen. Nothing- dead. So I hooked it up the battery tender. Now when I try- I get the same "errors" thing.

I run Shorai lithium batteries in all our bikes. I use both the wall wart style Tender and the bigger, bench style which I rotate on them plus a couple of spare lead-acid batteries. Recently I found that the wall wart Tender floated at 14V, where the bench one only made 13.4V on the same battery. There is a constant drain, so it could be a low battery if the bike has been sitting.

So... but if that was the case, then surely as soon as it came off of the battery tender then it should start (assuming it had been on the tender for a week or so?)

Hmm I really need to know before I take Friday off and drive 2.5 hours to the nearest shop. I'd feel really silly if it was just the battery.

Now- approximately a month ago after it had been sitting for a few weeks WITHOUT the tender and on a cold morning- it wouldn't turn over (tried to) until I charged it on the tender for just a bit. But of course, at that time it didn't do anything crazy drastic like it is now...

just some info for you, I leave mine for upto 4 weeks at a time, without being on a tender and it starts no problem. I worked a offshore month on, month off for the 1st 18months of ownership. Now it just gets left for two weeks, it could possible that you have a faulty battery or a diss-charge. Have you checked for how many amps its pulling when parked up??

I haven't checked that. Frankly, I don't know how. I imagine it's easy. I'll purchase a volt meter and try. I'm wondering if I should cancel trip to dealer which is on Friday... I guess I could order a new battery and install myself and see if that helps...

If this is a battery- it has a heck of a way of telling you so... (in my opinion)

Ok, it's pretty simple if you have a volt/amp meter.
Rather than me try to explain on how to, search youtube and google for how to check for a vehicle battery dischage.
Just be careful to have the leads in the correct terminals for either checking the battery voltage or current (amps) or you could damge your new meter.
Remove ignition key....
Disconect the earth lead on the battery and use your meter on amps setting between the earth lead and battery earth terminal.
You should see very little current being drawn. There will be some due to the immobiliser that usually flashes the red led when key removed.

Loads on you tube and the tinternet for reference.

did you know you can go through the settings on the bike to see battery volatage??
