I'm pretty sure I've seen this mentioned by other members here, but I've definitely started to notice degradation in the performance of the starter motor.

Sounds like there's a loose contact and it sometimes takes 3 tries to get the engine started.

If anyone knows where to look, I'd love to have a nose around myself before I have to cart it off to the dealers...

Starter is beside the oil filter.. Not sure if you'll hear or see anything externally wrong with it without disassembly..

Are you sure it's not related to battery charge level? ie does it happen when the bikes been recently run or after it sits for a few days. Or all the time?

It's completely intermittent Aussie, I've looked for a commonality when it occurs but haven't found one yet. Like I say, it definitely sounds like the electrical connection to the motor breaks for a few milliseconds before firing - enough to have to start the starting process again.

You need to get the starter replaced unfortunately :(

I checked my battery, cables, etc and tried to figure out some sort of pattern. Took it to the dealer. They had replaced 6 of them in the past week. It's been great ever since.

since owning the bike only once did it not fire up on the first try. But I've only had it a week. We shall see how things move along.

Are you saying they replaced 6 starter motors on 6 hyper 821 bikes?

Thanks for that info kuks. Can you please let me know if your symptoms were the same (or what they were if different) before you got the starter replaced?

Yep. 4 or 6. Its a common issue

Yeah sometimes it would take 3 tries to get it started. I'd hold the button and it would struggle to get turning and just click over and over. I'd have to stop and try multiple times.

Yeah, mines gotten slower and weaker. The pulses are slower and not as pronounced and usually catches on the 3rd. Haven't had click like a dead starter though. The only time it doesn't catch is when I release the button early out of habit. Battery is fine.

Well, crap. Anybody price check a starter? Mines out of warranty.

P.S. Anybody attempt a bump start on their Strada yet? I've certainly ran/pushed and popped sport bikes back in the day.

Thanks man, that's exactly the same symptom I have. Thankfully it's due for a service in the next couple of months. They've been pretty good so far so fingers crossed they'll replace it without quibbling!

I haven't had a click like a dead starter gat, just the symptom that kuks described above - more of a hard start.

I don't think you're gonna like the price of a new one, when a second hand one is retailing at £142...

I asked my tech about this. He said the weak starter is brushes and he can fix that without cracking the cases. The click and no crank is armature and requires splitting the cases and multiple days to allowbthe sealant to dry after replacement.

Thanks for posting this Paab.

Weak Starter

Hey Paab - do you have any details on how you can service the brushes without removing the entire starter motor? Thanks

If you've seen kuksul08's writeup on replacing the starter motor, you'd find that the cause of failure isn't from the brushes. It's from the poor epoxy insulation on the coils causing shorts.

That being said, I think you'd have to remove the starter to service the brushes anyways.
