Sidestand sensor malfunction

Just wanted to make a thread about this in case anyone else is affected.

First instance; I pulled up outside a shop, nipped in, and when I got back on the bike found that the engine would die as soon as I put it in gear. After a few goes I grabbed the toolkit and unbolted the sensor to have a fiddle.

Put it back on again and lo and behold, she's fine again.

Second instance; riding on Friday, I felt some very minor hesitation. I mean really minor. Enough that I just put it down to the bike having a bad day (although at the back of my mind I was hoping that this was not gonna be the something nasty starting to manifest).

Third instance; 80mph on a motorway, first time I had ridden again since second instance, and the hesitation returned. It was definitely more noticeable this time. Happened twice in the space of about 20 seconds, and then the engine died completely less than 10 seconds later. Pulled over, pulled off the sensor again, rotated it to ensure that it was the cause of the issue. It was.

Ended up taking the bike back home and grinding off the small post on the sensor so that I could move it into the correct position. Haven't had an issue since.

So although I'm now missing a working sidestand sensor, at least I have managed to resolve the issue. Contemplating whether to replace the sensor but I imagine it'll be pricey and I'm not concerned I'm gonna try and move off with the sidestand down.

Hopefully this'll help anyone else who might experience this issue. Peace out!

Thanks for the info!

I think the sidestand sensor is nice, but not a necessary thing. I grew up riding dirtbikes which never have sidestand sensors. It's just something you remember to do, like turning the gas on, or tightening your helmet strap.

Got the same problem at least three times. After the third failure I realized that carefully washing the sensor seemed to do the trick and no more problem since until the day I forgot to pull up the kick stand to realize the sensor was not detecting the deployed kick stand.

Maybe a fuse or something got busted in the sensor. I'm not replacing it this time. Friggen tired of fixing this junk. I've been lucky though. The two occasion it got replaced was under warranty.

Thanks NewRider to guide me here.

I had the same random engine stall on the last Sunday for the first time. I am planning to electrically bypass the sensor instead of grinding off the small pin on the sensor.

carefully washing the sensor

Anyway, could you explain how do you wash the sensor? My trouble started after I used a high pressure water gun to wash Hyperstrada.

Thanks.

I disabled the sidestand switch as shown in the pictures. I can recover the original condition easily since there is no damage on any parts.

I appreciate the info - good for a road side diagnosis, but call me a pussy, I wouldn't ride without the sensor. A hot day, lots of gear to put on, thirsty etc - I've forgotten my side stand a few times.

Hi appliance821, I am an old off-road rider and don't need any safety mechanism like the side stand switch. I will never forget deploying the side stand otherwise I can't get off the bike. Yes I am short in height ... ;)

I ride with a friend who has a red strada, and I have a white one. If our 2 groups met up it would be a funny thing. Also because I'm in the US northeast and you're in Japan - one of us would have taken a wrong turn somewhere.

Masanori -

Preparing for a ride to Alaska in about three weeks, thinking I need to be prepared to disable any safety switches in case of malfunction.

Is that just a strand of wire you used to jumper the two pins? What is the red cover shown in the second photo?

Thanks!

I have found that the side stand switch has just a little play in it. If you rotate it one way it will not work, turn it the other way then tighten it down and everything is fine. But it is very finicky.

Hi Jokeshopbeard - did you ever experience the engine cutting out like this but when you went riding ? mine cuts out infrequently did you clean the side stand switch connections or replace the switch or leave it out ..? did it stop the cutting out completely ? Cheers
