Tank bags?

I thought I remember seeing a post on here about someone gluing magnets on the inside of the black trim around the gas cap for a tank bag. This is what I plan on doing, magnets are on the way.

Metal plates were taped under the black trim. That's about all that would fit under there.

The magnets were attached to the bag itself.

I think you want to glue metal since the bags have magnets. But if you do glue magnets, make sure the polarity is right or you'll have an "interesting' situation.

Yeah, I was going to be sure that polarity was correct. We'll see if I can even get them to fit! Might be interesting. I just don't like all the options that involve straps. It just takes away the whole ease of use that magnets provide.

I wonder if there's a ferrous foil out there that would be easy to form to the plastics.

I agree that some of the off road options - like GL - have elaborate clip systems that are more for simpler trail bikes. In the case of GL they also have a zipper thing that looks impossible. Whatever wolfman is up to I can't even fathom. These things aren't of interest to me.

I use a Nelson Rigg bag and it's simple - one strap wrapped around the headstock, and 2 around the cross-piece under the seat. For fueling I just unclip the front 2 clips and let the bag hang. Pretty simple and very sturdy.

Jinx! Buy me a coke!
I literally just ordered that same bag after reading this thread 2 days ago!!
Great minds think alike.

Wish we could use the magnetic mount instead of the straps, but I'll post up some pics when I get it.

The Count

Ha ha Look forward to seeing how it fits.

What's wrong with the Ducati tankbag?

I don't use one anymore, but found it to be great quality and fit well.

Price and size? $250 for a tankbag that isn't waterproof is just dumb.

Apparently I'm "just dumb" as I have made numerous purchases from Toruatech, where their BMW tankbag was $399 and not waterproof either. (Instead they use a waterproof liner.) I also spent right at $1,000 for a Motoport riding jacket that isn't waterproof either.

I mean, you said it not me. I just don't think the value proposition is there. If you're happy with what you bought, then why would I care?

I have a custom made tank bag, perfectly sized for the hyperstrada, which cost me $40. Made with waterproof cordura, and uretek zippers. All I need are magnets underneath the black plastic tank cover.

I purchased the Ducati tag bag, got it on ebay for £90 with a small tear that my wife sorted in a few minutes, good as new.

It fits well but without the bag on the bike the rear clips are sometimes uncomfortable as they flap down a couple of inches into the inside of your thigh, not a problem with the bag fitted. The tablet case for the top is pointless. I was hoping to use my iPad for navigation on an Alps trip in June but a) it's too close to your chest to read easily, b) the reflection off the clear plastic completely hides the tablet screen. Back to my Garmin then.

Good to keep your phone charging using the port under the tank. Great for toll roads as well for easy access to change and cash.

Not sure I'd be so happy if I'd paid £189 for it though.

An alternative to the normal tankbag.

I don't carry much in front and don't like moving anything to refill the gas. So, my added crossbar and small crossbar bag are perfect.

Great for a concealed carry, and other small stuff.

Being able to move up and around on the bike is limited by tankbags, so this arrangement works better for me.

I carry tools and bigger stuff in back.

Let's keep it civil boys. Both you and RSL have given great info on this forum, and if we can't discuss tank bags in a friendly manner, the terrorists have won.:)

I've had the Ducati bag on mine full-time since new. I've had a tankbag on nearly every bike at one time or another, still have several. Compared to most, it fits the bike perfectly. I agree that the tablet case is a joke; it's a mini greenhouse. In warmer weather the sun will put an ipad into overheating mode, happened to a friend recently. It's not waterproof, but I very seldom have to ride in the rain.

Since I ride mostly back roads I carry a first aid kit, the manual, my phone, sunglasses, hat, and so on. Our toll road transponder will go in the map compartment for trips to the dealer. It's not in the way when I'm riding, hardly notice it. I just flip the bag back for fillups, so after three years of this the straps were tearing away the foam base cover. Ugly but still well fastened. This was not visible when the bag was secured but I fixed the tearing with a few stitches of waxed cotton thread. Should hold up for a while.

So for me, the bag has been worth the price. I got a nice discount as I bought it with the bike.

I've been looking for something for my SP to go on the tail. I don't have the rear rack/grab handles, so there's basically no room for storage!

RSL, your bike is dirty. This is not allowed on Ducati forums.

The Strada grab bars are a snap to add, aren't they?

I prefer keeping ride necessities in a small bag rather than huge panniers. I add a small combination lock to keep the "honest" people from stealing my stuff.

Yeah, they're $$$ though. Unless anyone here would like to get rid of them!

I have a broken set that you can have, or at least I think I do. Some moron installed a givi top case on my bike and spaced going back and applying loctite on the givi support bolts after fitting everything and well, don't do that.

I think they could probably be repaired to handle a tail bag. I'll dig them out this weekend and snap a pic of the damage if your interested.
