Throttle Blip leads to Engine Knock

Hi all,

Maybe it's the heat, ethanol, oxygenated fuel, but a new thing has popped up with my 2700 mile '13 HS. If I'm crawling along waiting for traffic to move again or a light to change, and I blip the throttle to match revs to gear to start moving again (maybe in second because I'm still going 5mph and haven't stopped yet, because clutch-out while already moving in first gear is jerky), I'll hear a knock. Just one. Sounds like dieseling, only it's just the one knock followed by a rev drop then back on again. Once revs are up there's nothing unusual. Not sure I'm describing it right...

What do you think? Lean misfire or something like that?

Sounds like the CPU is sensing the knock and adjusting the timing. I never have this problem, as we can split lanes here...

One thing, though...are you using "top tier" premium fuel? Many smaller gas stations use a mix that does not have nearly as much of the detergent additives offered by the majors - that would be Chevron, Shell, Mobil, Texaco, 76, Costco and very recently Arco joined the party. There may be others in your area, you can check it online. This prevents deposits that can lead to pre-ignition.

BTW....You staying dry over there on the Wet Coast?

My Panigale does it, listened to it with the dealer and we came to the conclusion it was the slipper. Have 6k on my Hyper and I haven't noticed it...then again between the exhaust, earplugs, and old age I can't hear crap.

Three weeks into our move to Vegas and I'm already looking forward to getting back to San Diego :(.

A Panigale and a Strada! I'm seriously jealous. Tell me you have a Diavel, too, and my head will explode.

Haha, no Diavel. I told my wife no more bikes...and then they announce the Scrambler :p. Seriously though, getting older I keep eyeballing BMW for some longer riding.

I saw my first touring BMW when I was 21 years old and knew I would be riding one in my twilight years. I could easily go Goldwing, too.

I was 27 when I bought my GoldWing in '93. I'd buy another now if I had time to use it for what it's meant for. Almost bought a used one before buying the HS. I'd probably never want a BMW tourer that doesn't have a boxer engine.

As for the knock, I don't think I can get the bike to make the noise on purpose, seems to happen spontaneously, and when hot. I'll see what happens as the weather cools.

When I got the Panigale, I was torn on the wet clutch. On one hand, I didn't have the claka-claka-claka anymore. One the other hand, I could hear how noisy the engines are. Toss in a slipper clutch and it's like a toddler on a drum set. Guys at MotoForza (thank you Jason :))were patient with my "it's making a weird noise" and finally sent me out on a demo. Wasn't just my bike that was going to spontaneously grenade :D. Been more relaxed ever since.

Has anyone else noticed this? Had my 'strada for a month now and this issue has started in the last week - same fuel I've always used, nothing changed, engine wise. Just over 6,000 miles on the clock.

Not sure whether to take it to the dealer as it's reproducible once the bike is hot...

Men, do not go quietly into the night...

Ain't nothing wrong with comfort and speed. My pops called me up one day and said he got a Cadillac. I think I answered "lame", or something to that effect. He replies "just come take it for a spin."

It was a CTS-V. I apologized.

The single "clunk" sounds to me more like clutch re-engaging. Revs drop because you were free wheeling or slipping clutch, but suddenly power goes to transmission gears and you're back under load again. Sounds normal.

well a cts-v is a beast.:)

Anybody had a chance to watch the vid above and have any ideas? I'm beginning to think it's not engine knock at all but at the same time have no idea what an earth it could be.

Tried running on 98 octane fuel and it seems to do it less, but it's still there. It'll go back to the dealer in a couple of weeks but from what I've heard of Ducati dealers (I've have no experience with them thus far) things like this can flummox them a little.

If anyone has any theories/ideas at all, I'd really appreciate hearing them!

Hi there,

my 2014 barely new HM has the same knocking while throttle blip. I'm upset, if I should contact the dealer for reviewing this behavior.

Kind regards

Yeah, it's not even an exhaust pop as such - it's more like a click/clunk kinda sound coming from the vertical cylinder head. The only thing I can think of at this stage is that it's the valves making slight contact with the piston as you can actually feel the click/clunk with your hand on the cylinder head.

I'll be heading to the dealer next week and will report back my findings here.

What is odd is that the bike sounds mechanically fine until the random noise. You can actually see your camera move when the noise occurs like the backfire is briefly "locking" up or. It's almost like it's pre-detonating (dieseling) and backfiring through the intake indicating that something is telling the ignition to fire a spark plug prematurely when the intake valves are open. Does it make the noise when you are riding under acceleration or deceleration or is this just at idle when you are blipping the throttle? I'm curious to see what the dealer says or finds when they hook up to the ECU.

Nope, just when blipping throttle or when pulling away from standstill (so essentially the same engine condition; raising revs from idle speed). I thought pre-detonation too, but from what I've read of it, I thought it would occur more frequently if that was what was occurring.

Baffled!

But at least I'm not the only one so my investigations will help others here when I get to the bottom of them!!
