Throttle Blip leads to Engine Knock

If you can feel a clunk on the cylinder head, did you talk to the shop about whether to be riding it there or getting it hauled to the shop?

Haven't talked to the shop yet actually; I'm using the bike daily and it rides absolutely fine. I love riding it too much to stop, and don't feel I should have to pay to get it hauled there. This issue only occurs very, very occasionally under normal riding conditions or if I try and reproduce it.

As far as I'm concerned, the bike still has nearly a years warranty. If catastrophic engine failure occurs it's down to the dealer to resolve - they need not know I had any prior knowledge of the issue.

That doesn't sound unreasonable of me does it?

Jokeshopbeard,

Whatever, this is just a forum for sharing ideas and experiences. No judging, no taking any offense, etc. Everybody rides their own two wheels, wherever, however they decide. It’s like that story of the guys that go riding together and when they stop, one has been following and is upset and complains about how fast the first rider was going.... and the faster rider just says "well, ride your own ride". Personally, it's the freedom of riding that I enjoy. Following isn't a real strength of mine..... besides, judging is too negative.

Check the warranty coverage - it might include transport to the shop. If you think it's a problem get it checked out. If it's repeatable they'll get a bead on it quickly.

Did the sound occur from now on or already at the beginning? Did you mention any change in frequency or noise level in time?
I think, if the problem gets worse, i would declare it to the dealer.

Are both of us the only users with this knock? I can't believe that!

Thanks man, that's a very composed and mature response. I appreciate you saying so. However I am also one not to take offence at a forum post, and welcome your opinion, whatever that may be.

I have only had the bike a month, so can't report for sure if the noise was there at first - I always ride with earplugs & music so may not have noticed it starting and/or getting worse. Also, I was riding quite conservatively at first, so this may have started only after I started to ride the bike harder/blip the throttle more.

I will however return the bike to the dealer asap (next week sometime) and will update my findings here. If anyone has any opinions on the matter in the meantime, I'd love to hear them!

I agree, there must be others. Out of curiosity, do you have a aftermarket exhaust installed? (I have Akrapovic)

My bike is totally original with less than 1000 km. I'll keep an ear on the knocks and report if anything changes.

Hello from Thailand.

I've registered just for this topic as my brand new 2015 Hypermotard has the same symptoms as mentioned here and I have also recorded the knocking sound.

The dealer however insists that this is perfectly normal, which does inspire any confidence at all.

Their advice was just don't blip the throttle.

"Don't blip the throttle" - what silly advice.

I have the same issue, as well. Usually it'll be with a hot engine, if I'm downshifting, clutch in, RPM drops < 2k (ish?) then i blip the throttle - sometimes it does that single 'knock' and nothing really happens with the engine RPM. it's pretty rare for me, and only seems to happen under the above conditions. let us know what you find out...

I can hear a metal to metal "click" a few times in Groove's video. I have never heard that from my own HS. I still wonder what the outcome was with the noise from Jokeshopbeard's bike. From the new video, I suspect this is not a dangerous problem, but it would be great to figure out what the cause is. The guys that said don't blip are a joke.... I would love to get a technical answer from Ducati or a qualified Ducati mechanic....

My problem still persists and I have now noticed white smoke coming out of the exhaust in sync with these metal knocking sounds. It's a very pronounced 'knock' as opposed to a 'click' as it may appear in the video.

I will try to get a better video up if possible, but I have just installed a new SC Project Oval high mount, so it may be harder to record the knock.
