Clutch Cable Snap

Sorry, but any clutch cable that breaks in under a year or with less than 20k miles has nothing to do with the owners and everything to do with Ducati. There should be no maintenance required on a clutch cable in those mileage or time constraints.

Resale values have nothing to do with this forum or people bitching or complaining. It is simply because this is a limited market bike and there is currently an oversupply. Even the regular hyper has a more limited market than bikes like the monster or other types of bikes.

Owners making excuses for Ducati will not help them make better bikes or overcome the perception that they are high maintenance compared to the Jap bikes (which they really aren't anymore)

Quick question...what's the 24mm wrench for? Do you mean open ended spanner or would some good multigrips do the trick?

In order to remove the fairings you have to reach a 24 mm wrench blindly behind the fairing to remove the lowest bolt. If not, the allen wrench bolt will just spin.

The 4mm is to remove some of the allen heads. The kit contains 3,5,6 mm allen head wrenches.

I removed this screw and will see if there are any detrimental affects. My apologies in advance to Bruder.

I think that's for getting to the fuse block under the LH fairing. You have to hold the flat nut thing on the back of the mounting bolt. I'd think an adjustable wrench or a pair of slip-joint pliers would do fine. Yes, you can get to it without removing the fairing, but not until you get a good look at it first.

Yup - and to get access to the coolant filler you have to do the same thing on the other side.

As noted in another post this fuse box contains a wrong rated spare fuse - so get some on line. I'm sure that was my fault Bruder, and I've sent a note of apology to Ducati.:D

Steffen is apparently having a bad day, but he's basically correct. If that cable broke right at the lever end, then it was from corrosion and lack of lubrication. The barrel end must be free to rotate in the lever, or it will always cause this kind of failure. These bikes do seem to have a problem with corrosion and water entry, but I suspect that some owners use too much pressure when they wash the bike or are careless about maintenance, especially in wet conditions. That would include lubing the clutch cable end before 10k miles.

When some of the magazine guys whined about the clutch action, that started the criticism. Then we have the complainers on the forums, like baying hounds. The end result is that dealers are having trouble selling them and resale values have plummeted. I'm with Steffen, you can ask for help but please quit yer bitchin'. Or go elsewhere, please.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but I disagree with Bruder's little rant. In fact it's a joke in photography circles that there is never anything wrong with a German camera - the fault lays with the user. That was the general response from Leica for any repairs.

I think that riders coming from more easy going machines - like BMW - are surprised by the alacrity with which the HP responds to inputs. They see this as a fault. I was pretty surprised, but yeah, get the rhythm and it all makes great sense - and the machine always responds consistently.

I haven't seen any long term reviews - or comments from riders who've ridden a lot of miles - that haven't loved the bike. Reviewers have a day or 2 to ride and get familiar with a bike. As good as they may be, this isn't time enough, and any unfamiliarities becomes a point of contention.

I'm hoping that with the fj-09 coming out, bikes of this size, athleticism, and broad capabilities will get more recognition.

I used to ride a BMW GS1200, it was a very good bike, but too good. It was like riding a cross between a sofa and kissing your sister. Completely without soul and character. It should come with a warning that it is so boring:rolleyes:
But excellent if you want to fall asleep on long trips:D

I don't get all the complaining about petty things to be honest, the recent problems I had fell squarely on the lack of response from the dealer, the bike itself did fail, but the fail I had was nothing near the experiences I have had on Jap, British and American bikes in the past.

I am not going to rattle on about the character thing, just enjoy the biek for what it is:)

I agree with the mentality of you want perfect by German, but be prepared to be bored out of your head;)

There have been quite a few reports of clutch cables snapping at the lever on relatively new bikes with low milage. This has to do with either a manufactuting fault, sub-standard part or ham fisted when fitted at the factory.
Even without maintenace (owners not lubing ) these cables should not snap so early in the bikes life!!!
Yes they are a servicable part and will wear and tear eventually, but with careful maintenace will see many years service life.
Any decent dealer worth its salt would agree and the part should be replaced under warranty.

Thanx for the input. Here's a bit more info:

Cable broke @ lever. Never have I had cable snap (3 Hondas, 2 Harleys and 01 Sprint ST)
or done any maintenance w/ mileage varying from 6k to 30K. Was I lucky???
Dealer almost suggested I ride too much and perhaps I "ride" the clutch and that I shouldn't " play" w/ clutch cable adjustment. WHAT!!??? I've adjusted to what works for me. Isn't that why it's adjustable to begin with?

Life in South Florida IS different!!!! Ur guilty until proven otherwise. This dealer's first response is almost always blame on user. Those of you who are fortunate enough to get items replace under warranty w/o a fight + get loaner bikes, count your blessings. We don't get that here. Everything's a fight. STRESSFUL.

I complained about the brakes (very noisy) and throttle (loses RMP and very sensitive) and get the usual response "cant replicate". I'll just have to nag I suppose, but it shouldn't be like that.

I like this bike, it meets most of my riding needs. Let's see Ducati comes back with in a couple of days. It is my hope the dealer and Ducati will stand behind their product!!

Peace.

@carib821

I can not believe your Dealer is saying this:mad: you really have a dealer problem NOT A DUCATI PROBLEM in the U.S I should open a Ducati shop there with better service!

From now on do me a favour, when the new cable is installed every time you clean the bike but a little bit oil right at the lever end to the clutch cable and you never have a problem again!

Like I said before you have to do little bit more then driving with the Ducati;)

Gruss Steffen

P.S I hope my English is not to bad?

@Bruder, your suggestion is noted. Just make sure you open the shop close to me...LOL. Ur English is fine, no worries.

Should have word today or tomorrow on what's going to be done. I'm anxious that's for sure.

Peace.

a bit off topic...

Bruder, your English is better than my German, even though I was fairly fluent in it as a child. It has been many years since I had anyone around to practice it on.

What's left has been useful though, I once met a Belgian tourist at a scenic overlook in Utah, who spoke no English. I asked "Sprechen Sie Deutsch?"; she replied "Ja ein Bisschen," and we had a brief conversation. Here's a pic she took of me.

@zippy49

I like the bike really Top and with a heart!

I think most important is to know where DUCATI come from and how the quality was in the past! WDW 2016 is the perfect place to see how DUCATI works!
Even you can make a appointment for your Bike for inspection and you can hammer the mechanics with questions and there are many other thinks to do!
Normally the date is coming out in Nov-Dec and it's every 2 years 2016 is the next one!

Update,

Finally I have "Isabella" back (2 weeks at the dealer). Dammit!!!! Anyhow, Ducati has paid for new clutch cable.....YAY!! Dealer will submit request to change out throttle after my naggin' and their testing....hope this gets rectified soon.

Did the 9K service (10500 actual miles), oil/filter/clean and adjust chain/plugs/new clutch cable/check/check/check stuff. Changed out the factory rear tire and installed a Dunlop Roadsmart II. Went for a 200 hundred mile breakfast run w/ the wifey and had no complaints. I was a little worried, as I now have some reliability issues with the bike. What else might fail?? For now all is well.

Oh, I bought the wife the Moto Skiveez underpants to try out. She says it definitely delayed the usual discomfort after 1 hour ride time. We were in the saddle for almost 2 hours. I'll probably get one for me too.

Thank you all for the support/input.

Peace

Bruder, Ill be sure to put a drop of oil at the lever/cable connection as you suggested.

What two weeks! WOW Next time I will send the cable to you within three days! That's really a dealer problem!

Question to the experts

Hello Bruder,
my last bike (BMW R100 GS) had the same problem with the clutch cable too. (But after around 90.000km :D
As I bought the new cable, the dealer told me to NOT put oil on it because of teflonsurface at the inside!

Are you sure that the Duc-clutchcable is an “oldschool one” without teflon?

Greetings from Berlin
Jens

@Jens,

no oil for the cable self, only for the top where you conect clutch lever with the cable just a drop of oil!

Gruss Steffen

Had the same issue while riding last week. But i had few strands on it so could manage up to home and it happened exactly near to the lever end as mentioned earlier by someone here. Spoke to the dealer, he came to my home towed it and replaced it for free and as per him this is a "common fault"

2013 HS purchased new. 1st clutch cable snaps right at crimp 2700mi. Purchase and installed new cable myself, made 4000mi, then snapped on e again right at crimp. Both times snapped on my street on way home. Hmmm, smart cables?

Dealer paid for and installed third cable. During process made slight modification to underside of lever to allow red plastic cover on crimp to rotate within the relief area in lever. So far 3000mi, no issues but we'll see. According to dealer Ducati changing the diameter on the relief on new production and suggesting to dealers to modify existing levers for customers experiencing the issue.
