Hyperstrada fuel consumption/seat comfort

So far, I only ride Urban in the rain. Looking at it technically, Urban should provide best MPG, as it reduces ponies and dampens throttle input. But, if you've tasted full motor in other modes, you might just whack throttle wide open in Urban to feed the monkey.

I'm out of gas finally! Carried a 3L can with me till I ran out.

I'm in Louisiana so about 400 ft above msl. Bunch of mixed riding on backroads, max speeds 78 mph. Low fuel light came on at 139.7, and I did mostly I-20 and I-220 after at about 75 to 80 mph indicated. Ran out of gas 2 miles from home on a 2 lane doing 65 mph. No warning, just died, red engine light came on.

I coasted to a turn off. 193 miles total to empty (53.3 miles on trip fuel). I put in my 3L or about .85 gallon, and cranked right up, died, cranked right up again and stayed running, no problems.

Awesome test, ST, but tell me you extrapolated how much gas you used. Like, how much did it take at fill-up, minus the .85 gal you added to get home?

I would never even get 175 with my riding style. I am finally comfortable with going 30 miles into trip fuel, though. Think my light trips between 109-119, on average.

I came home after putting my .85 in, so will find out tomorrow what the fillup is, but I have to travel some miles (I did zero trip1 after running out) to get fuel.

I was running in Touring mostly, only a few miles in Sport.

There was no warning, so on the interstate while passing and around 18 wheelers, I wouldn't trust it much past 40 miles on "trip fuel". I pulled the clutch and the blinker still worked as the ignition was on, but the engine was dead. You would have your hands full literally in a heavy traffic situation.

Fuel

I think 190 ish is pretty good for a 16l tank. This morning I put in 10.8l and had 130 miles showing. All in touring mode and commuting - still not to first service so still running in.

Just taken delivery of radiator guard and have crash bungs fitted. I'd like a fender extender - anyone have one fitted?

Cheers :)

SuperTen, thanks for doing this I appreciate the information and now we know where we stand on how far one can actually travel on a tank. I will be carrying 2 gallons on long trips.

I put my hyper in urban mode once, felt like I took a sudden step back and Id hopped on some kids fist bike really lousy even for wet. so I think I'm going to go into the main menu and turn urban into more of a hooligan mode with 0 DTC, 0 ABS, full power and full response

Took a 379 mile trip yesterday from Albuquerque New Mexico up north in Colorado just past Chama New Mexico. Elevation went from 5500 ft at 88 degrees to 11000 ft at 62 degrees. The speed was kept to around 70 or below. The bike averaged 58 incredible miles per gallon. I would say its definitely a 200 mile range bike. Taking it in today for its overdue first service. Oh, I never even looked at what the bikes computer mileage said. I just took the mileage and divided the gallons used on my phone calculator.

I filled up this morning, drove 15 miles since I put in the .85 gallon, and it took 3.27 gallons.

Maddoggie501, Yep, up in the mountains, taking it easy should get 200 miles.

So we did 177 miles today two up in elevations of 5000 feet and 9000 feet, we used 2.8 gallons of gas which equates to 63.2 miles per gallon and yes my butt did go to sleep.....

Amazing, Jer. Was it all 50-60 mph with not many full stops?

My butt holds up on 100+ mile days but my damn throttle hand won't stop going numb. I don't know if it's my non-moto Oakley gloves or my somewhat broken multiple time hand. I seriously have to keep all fingers wiggling the entire time or it goes dead.

I am getting 48 MPG consistently. Riding my regular 250 mile days, spirited 4.5k to 6.5k RPM with the occasional rev to near red line. Very happy with the MPG. I can comfortably do 175 miles without fear of running dry.

I put one of those ugly Black Sheepskin seat covers on my bike. It's a big difference in comfort. I'll use it until the aftermarket comes out with a better seat. I need to move back a couple of inches. No problem with my right hand going numb, but I did develop a very annoying pain on the inside of my right arm opposite the elbow. Can't figure that one out. I'll wait until the seat gets changed and see if the problem still exists. Still, not too bad for a 379 mile ride

Speeds were probably more like 40 to 50 with not many full stops.

That was in Touring mode and of course easy starts because the wife was on the back. Low fuel light came on at 151 and we went to 177 before filling it up.

I used to get a gnawing pain in my right back until I spent 3 months going to a chiropractor and got that straightened out now I have no problems with 6 hours in the saddle.

I have a pair of gloves that the fingers are a bit too short, it will make my hand go numb. I have to pull on the fingers to get some slack, then they are okay. Couple of other pair of gloves has more room and no problems.
