recall on steering head upper bearing seal

I just checkt the service manual, changing the steering bearings is not included, but pics of this area don't show such a rubber seal. it just looks like mine and the one from mentalist... whatever that means.

The spare part catalogue only shows seal 93010041B.
The new seal is not there, and maybe never has been.
Maybe Ducati has discover that the old seal is not good enough, and have put an additional seal on top.

Yep. I need to take mine in for the recall...again. This is the fifth time my shop will see this bike since last July.

My dealer said this was issued on 1/17 and this is the info they provided:

MY2013-2014 Hypermotard, Hypermotard SP and Hyperstrada (all country versions) - Hypermotard and Hyperstrada Updates

  1. Installation of the steering tube gaiter rubber - all motorcycle versions of referenced models
  2. Proper routing of horizontal cylinder lambda sensor cable

Darn. Seems like I'm missing it as well. I'll have to wait at least two months though.

mine's under a month old (and i suspect it came from the same assembly line in asia as that of ambientscape's) but still needs that update. i think the original design calls for that seal but somebody overlooked it in the assembly

the grease is too exposed without the seal. the gap too wide that small particles, debris and other contaminants can easily find themselves in there or the grease easily dry up and ruin the fun. very seldom that major bearings are not sealed, even in bicycles

So, over/under on worst that could happen? Maybe some grinding couple thousand miles down the road when you swing the bars?

TSB's are usually nuisance fixes. This obviously has some long term health issues but I don't think the front end is going to explode my next hop.

I've filed a report to my local Ducati dealer here for this case and hopefully they will take it seriously and checked the batched that is affected.

I know how it feels guys!

Just got the "recall" fixed. Didnt take long and its just removing the triple clamp and putting the dust cover on and putting back together. No big deal.

Ducati fixes these things pretty good.
I had a Benelli TREK ones and on the forum some guys had cracked frames close to an engine mount.
To get Benelli to fix this needed the assistance of road safety councils.
Benelli answered that it was a "minor" safety issue!
They finally fixed it but it was a real pain.

So the news spread by Ducati is great, sometimes the Italian way.

Regards.

Just had my recall notification from Ducati regarding the rubber seal.
Also got a recall about the wire routing of the lambda sensor of the horizontal cilinder.
Now waiting for a nice saterday to visit the dealer.

got my recall notice email today too, but i'd already spoken to my dealer and he checked the chasis no. and ordered the parts already for me.

showed my bike to the dealer two weeks ago and informed them of the dust cover issue. they said they'll fix it under warranty, just can't find time to bring it back yet

what's up with the lambda sensor? what did it say in the notice? i plan to have both fixed in one go when i visit them again

thanks in advance

Its to check the wiring routing for the horizontal lambda sensor, if a sump guard fitted.
