Starter Motor Replacement DIY

UPDATE

Hi guys. I'm just reporting back. I've changed the starter motor and now she's purring like a kitten. All the funny noises are gone. So it was definitely a faulty starter. No wonder Ducati stopped using the Taigene brand starters, they seem to be of very poor quality.

Did you do it yourself? If yes, can you rate the process and provide feedback on the job?

Hi. Nope, didn't do it myself. I probably would have attempted it myself if it wasn't for that darn liquid gasket. How easy this job would have been if the bolts were on the outside where one would expect an external components bolts to be...

On the last day of my warranty period I had the dealer change the starter on my HS being as though the parts bill for the fix is almost $800 CAD. Now the bike sounds significantly different on startup, and it definitely turns over with authority..

Agreed, the bike does start better as well with the Denso motor. It is scary what a new one costs! Luckily I found a used one on ebay for less than a third of the price of a new one

I may try complaining about this next time I take the bike in. I've never had it not start, but it is kind of silly that a bike this new takes more than a quick push of the starter to get going.

Take a look at your starter, it might already be a Denso unit. Look for the non-coated bolts.

I'm not sure when the supersession happened and was implemented on the assembly line and parts fiche.

Search the forum for a post "Taigene vs Denso" by kuksul08 who started this thread to see the difference between the two. The Taigene part number is is 27040127A and the latest Denso is 27040104A. The one I got is is 27040103A which is Denso and Made in Japan. Was also used on the 1198, so should be nice and strong. From what I could see the is 27040104A is Made in Thailand

If you have the Taigene you should definitely fight to have it replaced. Don't know how keen they will be to do it for you though, I have read some dealers are reluctant for some reason. If you do have a Denso already, then the starting problems might be something else.

All this talking about starters makes me want to go and start the bike now and marvel at how easy and quietly it starts now :)

My dealer said "cannot replicate the issue". I showed it right to the service manager's face and he said "well it still starts, we can't do anything until it breaks". That's just ********, and why I will never go back there.

I wouldn't go back to them either.

Who's the dealer? Munroe has been pretty good about warranty issues for me so far.

Sorry but I'm a little late to the game here. Can you tell if the starter is a Taigene or Denso from the outside of the bike or does it require disassembly? I am looking at a 2015 Hyperstrada at a local dealer and if this is an issue I will request they change to a Denso starter as part of the sale.
