Starter Motor Replacement DIY

Can't tell what material it is based on this pic... it might be worth buying one for $9 to see if the magnet option is worth investigating.

Got the replacement spacer and, Praise Yeezus, it's ferrous. Now I just have to cobble a narrow magnetic wand to try and fish the old one out of my sump.

Got the spacer out and sealed the engine back up.
*If that guide pin comes out with the engine case, reassemble the pin-gear-spacer set before mounting the starter.

The spacer was metal and I fashioned a thin fisher from a fridge magnet and wire coat hanger.

I'm at least another week from starting it up. While she's been down, I decided to address everything that needed attention/ replacement: clutch fix, clutch cable, fuel line, handguards, filters, sprocket, chain, tires, LED signals, new sliders, and more. I've just gotta start putting it back together.

I'll probably still have the fueling issue from our RB thread. If so, I'll disconnect the O2's to isolate. I'm sure those leads are corroded or maybe I have a dead sensor.

I changed the starter motor but the bike still won't fire up. You can tell that the new starter is trying to turn the bike over but nothing. I am all out of ideas. I think it's time to take it in and be charged for an arm and leg.

So if it's not the starter motor they are saying it's possible to be the sprag clutch. Does this ring a bell?

Yeah rare but possible. It's a special one-way clutch that can slip if not working right.

Yeah they called me today from pro Italia in Glendale. It's the one way clutch the flange and something else I forgot. It's going to cost $1,100 :(

Oh jeeez....
If it makes you feel any better I got charged $900 for a battery once. Theyre called stealers for a reason...

Yikes! I mean I did everything I could but the moment I gave the bike to them I knew I had to cough up at least a G.

Finally read through this whole thread...this is a bit of work...definitely waiting for my lift to clear to do this...

Signs of it, not full blown as described in the thread...found a Denzo off a 2010 Multistrada to swap and think I'll also do some other stuff while doing it, such as putting on a Samco silicone hose kit...

Im in the middle of this job right now. Some of the bolts were pretty stuck on there as I noticed some of the oem gasket sealent got on the ends of the bolts inside. Im just waiting on the alternator pull tool to be delivered. Im also replacing the hoses with samco ones as I noticed one of my hoses had started to rip and a small amount of coolant started seeping out. 2014 and only 13,000kms on the bike. Very premature failure in my opinion. I flirted with the idea of trying to get the cover off without the tool but with the trouble I had getting the clutch cover off, that sealent is pretty strong so ive decided that the alternator cover puller tool is almost a must to remove the cover evenly/safely.

While your at it change the sprag clutch bc that fails due to the ****** starter. I know, it cost me $1100

Am I hearing I should be replacing the sprag clutch while doing the starter? Reading how the sprags fail and the starter, I'm systematic for early signs of starter failing...

Apparently the ****** starter is causing the sprag clutches to fail. So it's best to just replace it while you have everything already open.
