Starter Motor Replacement DIY

Hope the better Denso is kind to my sprag, cause I didn't replace the sprag and I really don't want to cut her open again.

I got a question for the alternator cover puller tool you made. The middle bolt is not supossed to thread into the alternator spindle right? Because the middle bolt size on my hyper is 8mm but the one you made has a 10mm bolt? So its merly supossed to just push on the top of the spindle and to pull the cover off? Not to screw into?

That's right. It just pushes on the center. It's a really simple tool...

In my picture there are some nuts that i just used as spacers because my 2 screws were too long.

Can you believe the Ducati OEM puller costs over $160! The $25 one I purchased off eBay worked fine.

Oh I can believe it. That's where Ducati makes money - parts and service. I bet they lose money on bike sales. It's so simple though, I bet someone could rig one up from a door hinge if they needed to! NO WAY it's worth $160.

I actually have my generator cover tool if anyone needs it. gatdammit I would have included it in your package but I couldn't find it at the time...

The sprag clutch is an interesting one. Here's my theory for discerning sprag clutch vs starter motor failure:
-Starter motor failure: Press the starter button and the bike acts as though there is a dead short. Dashboard flickers on and off. Engine barely turns over and requires several presses of the button while making clicking noises. Slowly turns over and eventually catches. The starter and electrical system feels generally weak.
-Sprag clutch failure: Press the starter button and starter spins too freely. May occasionally grab and rotate the engine, but if bad enough the starter will spin without turning over the motor. The electrical system should still feel pretty strong in this case. touficzeidan, did you have the dash flickering issue when your sprag went? Did the starter sound like it was spinning freely but the engine would never catch?

It's funny this comes up because when I first brought my Hyper to the dealer in 2014 for the starter motor repair, they took the sprag clutch out to inspect it and said it was fine. I guess they have known about it for a long time. They said Ducati was requesting photos of all sprag clutches, I assume to look for score marks or something.

edit: I found the photos they gave me during that repair job. I guess this is the surface they were inspecting. Keep in mind, replacing this part requires a flywheel holder tool because it's behind other stuff. I guess you could use an impact gun too. And make sure you replace the nut and use threadlocker because they have been known to wiggle loose, so I've heard.

I'm in the middle of this project. Loads of carbon or burned residue and it even smells like something electrical burned. I was also noticing a puff of black smoke while turning the motor over and over attempting to get it started. I've got the Denso 27040104A on the way. In the meantime, I think I'm going to insulate the wires with some liquid electrical tape and see what happens. The worst is that I burn it up and that's no biggie.

Thought I'd put on my new to me Denso 27040104A starter. Like a big dumb ***, I over torqued a bolt and stripped out one of the three bolt holes on the starter heard. Uggghhh dammit! So pissed. I guess I'm going to have to order another damn starter, son of a *****.

Hey @Rebelmotard I feel your pain. A new starter is the easiest way. But could you also use a tap and die kit to thread a slightly bigger hole?

I thought of that but I'm also limited to the hole size where it mounts to the motor. I think I'm going to send some emails to Denso for a replacement cap and / or try a Helicoil.

Hi Chaps,

I'm just gearing-up to do this job, and think I understand it all, including being careful about the idler spindle that might come away with the cover...

My addition to the methodology concerns the puller required, and is relevant to other Ducati motors. Without that puller, the magnetic attraction in the generator will hold the cover tight and likely skew it if you try to prise the cover off. The puller acts centrally to the generator and is vital to combat that force. Homemade is fine, but don't try to take the casing off without it!

Thanks to everyone, kuksol especially, for the DIY info,

Nick

OK, I have to admit it; I must be an *****!

I've been tickling the job of the starter replacement for a while but can't work out how to remove the fairing sections that cover the radiator cap! I don't understand kuksul08's pictures, so I've just removed all the small fasteners I can see, but there are a couple lower down that screw into rubber isolators, and they just turn and turn. Do I need to unscrew them, presumably by putting a large spanner on the thin hex on the inside to hold them, or what? I've tried lifting and sliding the fairing bits but can feel no tendency for them to release themselves. I presume all the HS fairings are the same, from my 2013 model onwards?

I thought this was a job I could do pretty easily, but am totally stalled! Someone please help, or I shall have to take the bike to my overworked Ducati specialist mechanic...
