Suspension and Height Differences between Hyperstrada 939 Model Years

Hi Guys, I've just bought a Hyperstrada 939 and I'd like to get my head around what I've got...

It was built in 12/16, so does that make it MY 16 or 17?

I've heard that the last of the 821s were all 'low' models. Were the 939s std or low by default? How could I tell whether mine is standard or low? Is it a difference in suspension travel?

Congrats on your Hyperstrada 939!

Check the VIN number for your Hyperstrada — the 10th digit of the VIN represents the model year.

Hmmm, my VIN (with the last four digits masked) is ZDMBA00AAGB00xxxx so the tenth character is 'G'. What does that represent?

The engine number (with last four masked) is ZDM937W400xxxx so there's nothing looking like a year in that either...
 
I've also got a 939 Hyperstrada and been trying to get concrete proof of what I'm riding!
Mine was 1st registered 04/2016, no info when it was actually built

On my research travels the only solid way people seem to tell what suspension they have is a sticker indicating chain slack on the swingarm... No use if previous owner's taken said sticker off...
From the manual you'll see the dimensions diagrams (page 208/209), few differences between low/standard, hard to measure precisely though, easiest might be ground clearance (standard 163mm, low 145mm) but still a bit vague with guessing where they've taken measurement.

I was in Ducati few months back getting the belts replaced & asked them but they were unsure & couldn't give a definite answer, few didn't even know it was an option (to be fair, quite an old bike now, understandable). Their oracle service technician said Ducati usually label the low models with LS (low seat) in documentation somewhere, so in absence of that can only assume it's the standard suspension.

Side note, my VIN/Engine numbers are same as yours save for last 4 digits obviously.

So... if anyone has any better ideas, i'm all ears!

In the VIN you provided, the 10th character is 'G'. According to standard VIN year codes, which cycles through letters and numbers, 'G' corresponds to the 2016 model year (not the production or manufacturing year).

Not sure if all the stickers have been removed from your bike or not but have a look at what i posted here earlier.

Thanks, I didn't know that VIN codes contained years. Every day is a school day!

The compliance plate on the side of the frame shows the build date as 12/16, so I'm guessing that the VIN year matches the build year and quite possibly not the model year. Ducati announced the 2024 range in events running from July to November in 2023. Most car manufacturers are producing the next year's models in the last few months of the previous year, but I don't know whether that's the case with Ducati.

Of course it may be a moot point if the two model years are identical, but I'd like to know for when I order parts or spares.

I'll be getting my bike in the next few days, so I'll look for the swingarm sticker, and measure the ground clearance. Thx :)

Aha yes I'd come across your post on my travels. My bike has no low lean angle warning sticker either, but may well have also been removed.

Forgot that about the seat too but like you say in your post it only proves what seat you have, not necessarily what suspension you have. With mine the previous owner swapped the seat for what he called the 'racing' seat, which I later found out was the stock Hypermotard seat and the 'racing' seat is a completely different thing, dont get me started on seat identification haha!

Ahhh...yes, the seat conundrum. I had the original Hyperstrada seat and bought a used standard seat. Could hardly tell the difference. I finally ordered a new 'Racing' seat and it's considerably better. That means i have the full selection (3) seats now.
 
as of my knowledge, 939 HS only was available in normal height, no lower version of 939.
a short time I had my 2013 HS 821 standard heigth and my actual HS 939 (12/2016) side by side in my garage, heigth was identical.
 
Random thought... Does the low version have a shorter centre stand? If so that would be an easy measurement to check.

Good reminder. I meant to check this a while ago.

Not only is there a different center stand, the side stand is different also. Pretty sure you can't find the part numbers on the stands to verify what you have though and i'm not sure what you'd use as a point of reference for measuring. These following info is from the 2016 Hyperstrada USA list which is available to anyone who is willing to look for it on the corporate Ducati site. You need to look for the manuals for your particular bike and then it gives you the choices to download. See HERE

On a recent flight with too much time without internet access I looked through the entire spare parts catalogue to see what's listed as different for the Low Seat version. Here's the full list:

Front forks
Rear shock
Front brake line
Centre stand
Side stand
Chain adjustment sticker

The easiest item to measure, that would always be there, is the side stand. When I'm home on Wednesday I'll get the tape measure out...

Out of curiosity, I looked through the parts list for the 2013, 2015 and the 2016 after you made your post and one thing i noticed was that there was no listing for the tank sticker stating that the bike is the 'LOW' version.

I forgot to mention that I was looking through the MY16 spares catalogue for the 939, but it also has no tank sticker listed.

I took the measurement from the bolt to the bottom of the stand where the foot joins the leg of the stand. Mine is a 2016 Low Version.

I measured along the leg of the stand to the mounting bolt.

It appears that the measurement i have is 20.3 cm.
