Which tires for the Hyperstrada?

Anyone know what kind of mileage we should expect from these scorpion trails? And how good they are going to be on the pavement. I have nearly zero desire to take my bike off road so I'm thinking of seeing if the dealer will switch to pilot road 3s before I take the bike.

I've just hit 3500 miles and the rear is starting to square off. All road riding. Did a track day and got gear lever, foot rest and centre stand down. The tyres were superb, I can't really imagine what more I could have asked of them. I love the corners and even road riding i lean a good bit. Never even got close to losing it. Traction control has kicked in twice but mainly due to poor road surface.

I hope that helps. Away for winter now but I'll be fitting a new read in the spring.

Nowhere near needing new tires yet, but I plan on using Pirelli Angel GT when I do. I'm a long distance kind of person, commuting with spirited weekends. I have used these tires in the past with incredible results. Got edge to edge traction in all temperatures on my zx14, with life up to 18,000km to the wear bars. I enjoy vigorous acceleration, so with all the torque and 2 up travel loads it handled i was quite impressed. Very happy, great value. I would not recommend them if you do any dirt roads, though.

Pirelli scorpion Trail have an amazing grip I still cant believe that these are trail

I had 6000kms (3700miles) on my stock trail before it was toast! Canvas showing, and put a road 2 on the rear. Last year I took my R6 on a 6337 km run to deals gap, and my road 3 had half tread, and better grip.

Not for me - they seem pretty hard. Only half worn at 3K. I'm ready to mount some Dunlop Q3s. They will be much better for the roads I ride. Have put them on three other bikes already; they have great grip and better stability under braking. I had Rosso Is on the wife's SV, the Q3s were a big improvement.

I note that my riding is mostly on empty back roads, which I tend to treat as track days...my tires tend to wear out on the sides first. If this were a commuter, I'd go with something harder.

Test ride report

Got the Dunlop Q3s mounted, set the mode to Urban for the first 50 miles. A handy way to ease break in; kept the speed down below 55 too. Then back to 'enhanced' Touring, and a quick lap of Ortega yesterday.

First, the Q3 rear is about 1/2" bigger in diameter than the Scorpion, so I reduced the rear preload a bit to compensate. The bike feels like it's on rails now, with much better grip and stability. Turns better, too. Got to about 1/4" of the edge right away. And my wife, riding her SV, commented on how much less 'squidgy' the front feels, compared to the Rossos. So that makes 4 bikes that I've fitted them to, including my now-sold Buell. They performed equally well on all.

And they're even made here in the USA...:)

I plan on getting some Q3s on the stock rims, and getting a set of TKC80 (or similar) on a 2nd set for rides with dirt involved.

I took a nice 2-day ride with some off-road this past weekend, and I gotta say, I was surprised at what I was able to do with the Scorpion Trails. These were "fire roads" but with some very steep grades, deep ruts, lots of rubble, and varying soil/rock types. Then hit the pavement, and hustled through the twisties quite well. Though, I can't wait to try with some TKC80 or something similar.

I like the way you think!

The Scorpions do a decent job in the dirt and obviously better the more hard packed terrain you put them against and leaving the traction control turned on helps with most other things encountered.

I used to do quite a bit of dual sport riding in the SoCal desert. Always ran a small knob Kenda or other cheap brand. These worked much better on the paved sections. If you encounter deep sand, the only things that will save you are (a) a light weight bike and (b) speed. Knobs help may help with the latter, but the 'Strada is no 250 lb. dirt bike.

Tires like the Scorpions seem mostly about style and not any better than most street tires on our fire roads. They are usually a bit of gravel on hard pan, nothing really works that well. A softer compound might help. Setting the pressure down to about 15 psi helps the most! Not recommended for high speeds on pavement, though. Or with fancy wheels...

That said, I have a friend on the IOM who runs his BMW GS1150 that way... I think he's a bit nuts.

I used "Urban Mode" with the following changes:
Engine Response - Medium
DTC - 3
ABS - 1

I found that setting to work very well. The didn't come on so much that I couldn't slow the bike on the steep downhills, and would allow the rear to lock up a tiny bit. The level of DTC was perfect.

I agree, the scorpions have great grip, have tried them from edge to edge and have enjoyed great confidence in them; not much of trail tyre on wet grass, but a great tyre on the road in all all conditions. I have now done 7,100 Kms and have steel belts showing on the rear (a bit too much Sport mode). Ordered Angel GTs so it will be interesting to see how they hold up in terms of grip and mileage.

I've got 3000 miles on my scorpions now and they have been great so far.
They have started to show signs of wear now, the rear has started to square of a little, but the front has scrubbed off on the sides with little wear in the center!
They have been thus far better than I thought they were going to be, I did feel the front slide a couple of times last time out, but it was cold/damp and greasy road.

Anybody have any experience with the Anakee 3 tires I'm interested in them

I tried them in a Triumph Tiger 800 rented this summer to do a travel of one week along the Pyrenees. They were very very well in all surfaces and dry and wet. We were two up in the bike with full bags (sides and top case). Don't know if in the hyper with is much more lightweight they will go so well.

I've also got a friend with the same bike (Tiger 800) and has these tyres and he feels a lot confidence with them.
