Brake Noise

Anyone out there got noisy front brakes on their Hyperstrada or Hypermotard? Mine has quite a groan coming from the front binders during moderate to strong use. If I come to a stop with very light force on the front brakes it'll stay quiet, but with even moderate lever pressure I get a nasty groan & vibration. I pulled the pads and deglazed them and added a bit of grease to the back of the pads to hold them to the pistons better. This made them perfectly quiet for approximately 5 stops, after which the noise came back same as before. I've checked all the hardware for correct torque, and the rotors do not seem to be warped. I've only got 200 miles on it and love it, but this noise has got to go. Anyone else got this issue?

ABS System noise? I experienced a nasty noise by hard breaking last day, too. I thougt it was the ABS though

Might be the ABS, as that will make a grauncing type noise,

when you say you added grease to the back of the pad and de-glazed them, did you add some grease to the outer sides of the pad, top and bottom where it sits in the caliper?? this should help.

Wow I literally noticed the same thing today. Front brakes are noisy as hell just like you described. I'm taking it in for the 600 mi service on Tuesday so hopefully I'll get an answer.

The noise is absolutely not ABS-related. When the ABS kicks in you'll feel a slight pulsation in the lever, but it won't create any noise in and of itself. The noise is caused by the brake pads either vibrating against the pistons or intermittently grabbing at the rotor and thus shuddering across the rotor surface causing the groaning noise several of you are hearing. This type of noise is precisely why most automotive disc brakes use one or more shims between the back of the brake pads and the pistons. For whatever reason, most motorcycles do not use brake shims for noise supression. It's been an old-school trick on single-piston calipers to cut a shim from sheet aluminum (or even a Coke can!) and place it between the pads and pistons with a dab of grease for adhesion to quiet brake noise. I've never attempted this on a monobloc caliper with four pistons though. I'm heading in for first service next Saturday and we'll deglaze again, though most likely will end up replacing pads to see if that's a permanent fix as I expect the noise will return quickly as it did when I first deglazed them. I'll keep you all posted.

Yeah, that's obvious, but not the issue. I posted this thread to get a feel for how many of us new Hyper owners out there are having this issue and if anyone's managed to get it cured yet. My dealer is certainly going to fix it, but I'm wondering whether this is an isolated incident or symptomatic of a larger problem with a batch of brake pads from Brembo, or some such thing.

I applaud your effort in troubleshooting but why would you on a brand new vehicle? The nice thing about a new car/bike is you have the ability to tell a dealer to fix it free of charge. If he finds you tinkered with it a less than honest shop could hold you liable for damage.

I hear also a strange noise in the brakes or the fork. Only with (very) hard braking. My opinion is that it come from the front fork and not from the brakes. I think the front suspension is to soft for a "hot" ride on a strada.

Yep I have experienced the same noise from the front brakes, this will be added to the list for the first service

I always hear the nasty sound, when I break very abruptly... slowly build up the pressure, I can break very hard without the noise.
As soon, as someone has talked to a ducati mechanic, please post the result... I already visited the 1000km service.

I took mine in for the 600 mi service today and the tech deglazed the pads. He said that it was probably some dust or debris that made its way into the pads and that this kind of thing is somewhat common. He said not to worry if it comes back. It's been fine for the last twenty miles but we'll see after the next few hundred.

I asked it my dealer today about the noise from the fork/brakes and he told me not to worry because it's normal when you brake hard. It was also typical on a 1098 according to him. Let's wait and see.

What a load. Brake noise is never "normal" nor acceptable. Yes, debris/dust can sometimes accumulate and cause noise in disc brakes, but it's hard to swallow that explanation when mine made noise with less than 10 miles on it. Yes, I can brake more slowly/gradually and keep the brakes just below the noise threshold, but why should I have to work around such an issue? It seems to me to be a problem with the pad material Brembo has supplied. It'll be interesting to see what happens after the tech does the deglaze trick again or if they replace the pads with another set of the original part number. My bet is that the noise will be back quickly and that a set of pads
with a different material composition will be the ultimate fix, but we'll see after Saturday's session at the shop. Still, it's a small issue and I absolutely love this bike! Oh yeah, as for why I've dug into it as far as I have when it's under warranty, I'm just an old tinkerer who's been riding/racing for too many years to remember so any technical issue is pure fun for me. And I've got a fantastic dealer who won't give me any flack about it. Time to ride!!!

Okay, update time. Had the first service done and tech deglazed pads again & gave it some seriously vigorous stoppies and it's much better. After a good backroad blitz I had a few moments where I thought I heard just a tiny hint of the earlier noise, but not enough to say definitively that I heard it. And the feel at the lever is fine now without the shuddering feedback that would occur whenever it made its groaning noise. So all in all I think the brake noise is banished, for now. If it comes back on the next ride we'll move on to new pads and I'll post another update to let you know how it goes from here. Oh yeah, and I love this bike!!!

I've definitely got a warped rotor(s) up front. I hope it's covered. I was very methodical on bedding in brakes.

I was warned when I took delivery to go easy on the brakes for first 60 miles or so. Think the manual says to break them in gently also. Anyways, no problems and I am at 1426 miles. I mostly use downshifting and engine braking tho.

Thats good to know!

I engine breaked almost entirely for first 200 miles, then started bedding in. Sucks. My dealer has been straight so far. We'll see.

OK, I have the noise. I ride with headphones that deaden a lot of sound and haven't noticed it until today. It's a mechanical grunting noise with moderated to full front brake application, and it comes in right before full stop. It seams to cycle a few times with my warped rotor(s).
