Brake Noise

Martin, that "grainy" feeling in the forks is exactly what I'm trying to describe. If bike is completely stable - buttery smooth. But any movement in forks and it feels like a couple hair clippers are attached to the front end, just open conduit to pavements surface.

The techs look at me like I'm stoned when I try and explain this. No idea if related to brake issues but seems too coincidental.

Over use your back brake and you will feel what abs is like. I have the front problem too, I think the floating disk almost feels too loose. I can actually rattle mine

I will check and try to move my disk then too, gonna tell you more later. Going to test and reconstruct circumstances leading to this phenomena this evening.

OMG, I thought it was just me with the grainy suspension. My 2008 Hypermotard was stiff but smooth, my 2010 Tiger was buttery smooth, the Strada is like riding with grain in the forks and then you brake and it sounds all to hell. I know its a new model with new model teething issues but I'm really starting to regret buying it. I may take it to a local suspension place and have them look at and rebuild the forks, once the brake noise gets sorted of course

Don't regret yet. You are still under warranty and that is definitely a no-go, however new a bike would be. I'll insist on getting this noise plus the fork fixed. The rest of the bike is so great, engine, design, anything. You wouldn't have bought it in the first place if it wasn't what you ideally wanted. Nothing is perfect, but under warranty we can still pretend and insist on making it so ;)

A little braking noise video

Hi guys,

I uploaded a little "braking noise compilation". This video includes 13 different scenes while coming to stops showing the whole spectrum of noisiness. Would appreciate if any of you confirm that they experience exactly the same kind of noise. I'm still not sure whether it's the brakes or the frictioning front fork. Thanks!

all I hear is engine idle and brake squeak. My forks/brake friction doesn't make any noise that I'm aware of. I feel it more than hear it.

Am I stoned, or does the idle track not skip a beat through the entire vid? It's almost like you laid down a constant track of desmo idle thrum. Weird.

Your front sounds like my back.
If only my brake noise was that good...my front groans like my missus if i dont feed her

You must be stoned or I got the perfect cuts for you hearing anything constant ;) Well, the fork feels like it's not perfectly fitted somehow and get friction all the time too for me now. I'm going to request an overhaul or a new fork as my bike is just 1 week old now. I get numb fingers as well over the time and it's not the rough V2-vibrations but definitely some high-frequency vibes from the fork

Well, I switched off the ABS (per dealer guideline) and rode the bugger at the weekend and the brake noise is still there. LMAO as the service manager said it was the ABS when I took it in a few weeks ago.

Now he says I should leave it with them but before I do that I'm gonna strip out the pads and deglaze them. Its a 2hr round trip plus loading and unloading the bike, I aint got time for this crap. Maybe try another dealer.

I feel ya, Twozzie. I just did a 5 hr roundtrip to drop mine of for the "extensive analysis", and loading on trailer with blown rear tire was not fun.

My Hyper makes a real howl under medium level braking. It sounds like trailer brakes on a semi. My theory is that it is the pads vibrating in the callipers.

I does not do it under hard braking, and I'm sure if I de-glazed the pads it would stop it for a while.

Probably good for scaring the crap out of car drivers.

Well, I deglazed the pads and then went for a ride and no difference so its in to the dealers this week. They can keep the bike for as long as they want to get rid of the brake noise, sort out the brake pulsing, & improve the grainy suspension.

took the bike to the dealers today (not the same dealers as before), the tech took a quick look and noticed the front floating disc isn't. The "buttons" should move and spin freely and they don't. I did ride a new Hyperstrada with couple miles on the clock and the brakes were silky smooth, not like mine at all. I hope they find something.

twozzie, I think we are simpatico in the brake issue department. The first time I had mine looked over for the brakes they mumbled on about the buttons, saying sometimes they can stick and what not. It's ruining my Ducati experience. Every ride I'm just focused on my crappy brakes and how stupid I look trying to stick a smooth stop. Now I over scrutinize the entire bike, especially the suspension right now.

Keep us posted.

My hyper has always had the noisy brake problem. Sometimes sounds like a semi stopping at the lights.
My disk "buttons" rotate properly. I think it is fairly plainly the pads are just noisy. If you don't like it change the pads.

Interestingly I rode my son's Truimph Street Tripple yesterday, guess what: same noise. Not as quite as loud, but otherwise very similar.

GuyW, noise is not a problem. I could give a shat about a little squeal. Maybe you didn't read the entire thread but some of us are having compound issues. I have a noticeable warp point that makes stop and go driving not very enjoyable. If they all rode this way, so be it. But when the demo rides like my bike did for the first 800 miles, there's an issue.
