"Error" and all dash lights flashing, Fan Turns on, No Start...

TCU = Throttle Control Unit. These bikes are Ride by Wire.

I'm no EE but I've owned and even built a few audio amps. That "suppression device" is likely a choke and a capacitor, which would filter out any unwanted AC (alternating current) spikes. Semiconductors do not like them!

Well I had dropped the bike off at the dealer on Saturday. I was supposed to have it fixed and then bring it home, but of course the mechanic called in sick after his shift already started. 6 hours of driving, wasted! Ugh. So I had to leave it there. Photos/info on the CAN filter will have to wait until next weekend!

Doh!! That sucks. I spent 8 hours at my ducati dealer before waiting even when I had an appointment. They were taking walk-ins before me.

So the service writer said that in order to install the filter, the tech had to splice into the original wiring harness. I will be digging in this afternoon to find out if that truly is the case. Stay tuned for photos and install instructions!

Well I called into the dealers today to collect a part. Whilst I was in it asked to check if any recalls outstanding and low and behold the dashboard suppression cable and software update are required. I haven't been notified of either of these recalls. I've had the bike from new and the dealer couldn't tell me why either. Anyway the new part is on order and will be fitted in a few weeks along with the update. All free of charge.

Is it free of charge because your bike is under warranty or is it free even if the bike is off warranty?

It's a manufacturer recall. It's free of charge to install at a dealer, whether you're in warranty or not.

Doh... I figured it was something like this.

Cant wait for more details :D

They're not actually cutting any wires when they do the CAN-BUS filter install. They're de-pinning (3 wires I believe) from the harness instrumentation connector, then adding a small box with a coiled up section of wires between the de-pinned harness and the instrumentation. Quoted time for the install is 1hr according to the instructions.

Just a heads up, if you've already got limited space behind your headlight after installing Ducati farkles.. the tech is going to hate you :p

Interesting. So putting the filter in-line. Probably CAN-Hi and CAN-Lo, and ???. Did you have it done already?

Yeah I made mention to my tech that he didn't have to re-ziptie all of the extra wiring I had back there. I think he was pretty well steamed if I had to guess! haha

As for tearing my bike down yesterday, I was mostly focused on getting it ready to check the valves. I'll take the headlight off today and go in to inspect the CAN filter.

Edit: Finally got in there to take a look. I didn't decide to take off any of the wiring wrap, but zibbit is right. This looks like it was de-pinned with the CAN filter being installed between the old pins and the plug for the dash.

Photos HERE.

In that case it's likely an LC or CLC filter, aka "pi filter". I think someone here called it a choke - same thing. It's very effective at damping out noise.

Thanks for the pics. I'm glad they didn't have to cut the wires - that would lead to so much variability with the install.

wrote VINs to my dealer Ducati Vienna

my HS821 my2013 has the CAN bus filter recall (bike will be sold soon),
my new HS939 (late 2016, bought by another guy in 12/2016 but 0 km on speedo, he sells because of several "slipped disc" without beeing driven) does not have it

so, it seems they have worked out the problem with newer models

This has yet to be seen. Not trying to worry you, but let some miles get put on some bikes and we'll see if anybody has this issue.

In this case i trust Ducati. If they do a recall for specific bikes and some not, i really trust in Ducati that they know why.
Of course, other problems always can occur, but in this case it lasted really long (nearly 4 years) until they brought a solution and i do not see any reason, if they know the reason for the fails, why they still should implement the error into new bikes.
As of my Ducati mechanics the "recall", actually more a "circular letter", came out in 11/2016.

No I haven't got it done yet, it's on the list for the pre-season checklist. I might be dropping the bike off at Ducati tomorrow and I'll see if they'll print the instructions/info for me.
