Hello with a question... go new or used

Greetings fellow riders,

Signing in from the small country of Luxembourg. I currently ride a 02 SV650S which I'm looking to replace with something a bit more modern and a bit more comfortable too.

My riding profile is fairly average I guess, commute when the weather isn't too bad, weekend fun rides and general preferred mode of transport over the cage.

I'm now pondering wether I should go for a new model, or a used one. There is someone selling a barely broken in (2000KM) '13 Model in very good condition for a very attractive price (a good 4k€ less than a new one would cost).

There's a few indications that the earlier models are less reliable though. If I bought new, the updates and fixes would already be done, and I would have the warranty on top.

Any thoughts?

SV's are very reliable fun bikes. My riding buddy has one and has put a ton of miles on it with virtually no problems. If you are the kind of guy who has the tools and ability to work on your own bike, then go for the used. If you don't have the tools and take your bike to the dealer for services and repairs, then you will want to spend the extra money and go with the newer model with warranty. With that said, make sure you buy from a good dealer with a good reputation because warranty support is only as good as your dealer. As you have probably noticed from all of the posts on this forum, the Hyperstrada does have its quirks. Go onto ebay and search for parts for the SV and do the same for the Hyperstrada. You can virtually build an SV from parts found on ebay. The same is not true for the HS.

A factory warranty is worth at least 2-3000 euros/dollars (almost the same thing lately) to me. 4000 might be a stretch for me. As long as all the services/updates were done by a good dealer garage, there is no real difference in the '13 and '15, IMHO. So if, for example, both were sold by a good dealer, I would take the '13. If the '13 is private, then it may depend more on how much you like tinkering. Whether a '13 or '15, it's a great machine and super ride. Love mine. It's a MOTORcycle!!

go for the used one , i bet if you ask on here nobody will have spent 4000 on repairs on a hyperstrada, they are reliable it is just that you only hear about the things that have gone wrong with bikes on any forum not just this one.

I'm with r3monkey...most of us have had nothing but good times on our 2013 821s! You'll have the extra bucks to fix the forks, too.

Actually, there has been most of an 821 SP on fleabay...parted out.
Although they are getting better, Ducatis still do not appear to be designed with rider/racer mechanical friendliness in mind. I can check the valves and change spark plugs in less than a half hour on our '05 SV...would not even attempt it on the Strada.

That said, I'll sell the SV long before I consider offing the Duc!

Id definitely say go for the used if its lower miles. You might even still have left over warranty. The Hyper was the first bike I ever bought brand new and while I dont regret the purchase, I will by used from now on. The depreciation is rough and I knew it was going to happen going into the purchase.

Mad love for SV's. I had two 650's and a 1k. I definitely miss the ease of maintenance and extra case I had when running them!

Cheers for the Input everybody, much appreciated. The used one has a good Service Record at the same official Ducati dealer where I would buy a new one. (That's easy because there is only one in the country

)

The financial advantage is really good on the used one, so that will probably sway me towards it. There will be no warranty but I'm fairly confident that the Dealer will continue to give good support in case it's needed.

Agree with y'all, the SV is a really nice do it all bike, ride it with no regrets. But what can a guy do when red blooded passionate Italian mistress calls?

I considered getting a demo model bike...but then you never know how many people beat on it which means that break-in period rules were not followed....I would buy say a pre-owned honda or suzuki because there are so many parts for those and any mechanic can fix it. But these Italian bikes need more care so I worked a sweet deal and bought a 2013 white HS with only 8 miles on it!
